Have you ever heard of this? - gift registry related

i am friends with a couple who are expecting a baby in a few months. they do not know if they are having a boy or girl.

the mom-to-be has registered for both a boy bedroom and a girl bedroom .. we're talking two crib sets, mobiles, picture frames, window valances, wall decor, the WORKS.

the sad thing is that none of it has been purchased - i'm sure others are scratching their heads like i am. who wants to purchase something knowing there is 50% chance it could get returned?

isn't the tasteful way to do to choose a gender-neutral bedroom, or don't register for it at all?

honestly... i would get what she picked on the regisrty. I wouldn't care if she returned it or not. I think it's okay that she registered for both, why not?

I agree with you -- it would be better to select something more neutral or wait to make those purchases after the baby is born.

I think it is strange. I would either do gender neutral or nothing at all.

I've only seen people register for neutral items.

If they wanted specific gender items they should have found out the sex.

ETA: I would think she's going to get many mix matched items this way. Very odd.

She may have wanted them both on the registry so that she can get which ever one she needs at a discount after the baby is born, in case she doesn't get the right one as a gift.

They could have registered for it, just so when they do a registry completion after the baby is born, they get the discount. My sister did that for the furniture for my nephew. She didn't do it hoping someone would buy it for her, she did it because I believe there is either a 10 or 15% discount when she completes her registry.

i like to buy something that i feel good about - something that i know the person really wanted and that they will get a lot of use out of. i put a lot of thought into my gifts and even when it's a registry gift - i want it to be meaningful

yours will be meaningful, if you are lucky enough to be correct in picking the gender specific bedding.Chat Icon

I just saw this last weekend at a shower for the first time!

ETA: The same person bought both bedding sets so they realize one will be returned.

as a gift-giver, that is brilliant. i can buy the boy and girl version of the item, and it is like getting her what she wants plus a gift certificate!

But, she DOESN'T want everything on the registry... just one set to go with the baby's gender...

We didn't get a discount when we did our registries. What is involved in "completing" your registry? Is it when everything that is registered is bought? Wouldn't two bedroom sets almost guarantee that you wouldn't be able to complete the registry?

Well, she could always return it when she has the baby and then get something else.

ITA. She might already know who is buying the set, and wants to have the options on her registry for after the baby is born.Chat Icon

It's a one time discount for you to shop for anything that wasn't purchased. You could buy one thing, or everything. It's the option to complete, not a requirement.

Why should anyone have to find out the sex of their child to use gender specific bedding? Chat Icon That a silly comment.

I know a few people who registered for boy and girl bedding and I did the same for myself.

My very good friends got together and bought both sets, this way I can return one et and get other things I may want/need.

There are no mis-matched items either, I also received the girl hamper, lamp and some other items from someone else, and they obviously know it chances to get returned, and obviously she was fine with it.

If you don't like it, give a gift card. Chat Icon

ETA
Do you know how hard it is to find a decent sselection of gender neutral bedding? It's all ivory and mostly masculine. And with ivory furniture, it doesn't go.
And the tasteful comment was uncalled for. Chat Icon

I've never seen a registry done like that, but I'd say she's a girl trying to have it all—being surprised at the birth, and having a gender specific nursery. Good for her!

Re: Have you ever heard of this? - gift registry related

my only concern with setting up a registery that way is that stores have become very strict about taking returns, and if she doesn't get gift receipts, she might get stuck with a lot of things that she can't use.

Re: Have you ever heard of this? - gift registry related

I sort of did this but it was with my layette. My mom and MIL bought our layette for us. We picked it all out and it was kept aside. A full set of boy stuff and a full set of girl stuff. After I had the baby, the correct set was picked up. I didn't know what I was having but I wanted gender specific stuff. I also put matching accessory pieces on my registry at BBB for each the boy and the girl. I didn't have a shower so a majority of my stuff wasn't bought until after I had the baby anyway. The only people that were buying us gifts knew I wasn't finding out the sex of the baby so it wasn't an issue for anyone.
Maybe I am missing something here, but why are you all so bothered by this? Chat Icon Chat Icon Maybe the new mom really want stuff that matches!

Re: Have you ever heard of this? - gift registry related

I never heard of this. But in the discount sense, I can sort of see.

Or if you plan to buy after hte baby is born, at least you know what she wants. But before hte baby is born, I don't really understand why she would want the hassle of returning things being a new mom and all.
