Having a student teacher?
I just became mentor/cooperating teacher certified ...about a week ago...and I found out that the intern from last year is going to be in my classroom. I am teaching 6-8, he would be following around my 6th graders...so he would just be in my class for 6th graders-90 min block of Language Arts.
I have never had a student teacher since I JUST became certified. Also, I started my student teaching mid year so it was different.
How would you go about starting the year off?
I know him- he is REALLY good- he knows most of the kids already since he was in our school interning all last year. I have 100% confidence that he will be a great teacher...
Any ideas from people who have had a student teacher?

Wow, you lucked out! The beginning of the year is the BEST time IMO to have a student teacher. There is so much going on in the beginning, that having two extra hands is the greatest! It's also a great experience for them to see the craziness that is the beginning of the school year! Don't do anything different, let him experience it for what it is...that's why he's in your room!

Re: Having a student teacher?
I will be "starting " off the class, but when would you let him have the class to himself... since the beginning of the year we discuss rules and procedures- which I have set up already-would you have him follow what I have, or should he be able to "create" his own?

Re: Having a student teacher?
I always have my student teachers follow my discipine plan, unless of course it is one of their assignments to create their own. All of the student teachers I've had don't get the class to themselves completely until their last week...it's called their "solo week". Until then, I give them one or two lessons to teach a day, and when they're not teaching, they're walking around the room, giving one on one help. Your situation is a bit different than mine...I'm a second grade teacher and have the same kids all day. Honestly, it depends on his ability. You say he is very capable, so it would probably benefit him to have the class to himself after a few weeks. But I would definately have him follow your procedues. Once he leaves, you want your students to be used to the way you run your classroom.

Good points... I am meeting with him today so hopefully I will get a better understanding of what his university expects of him as well. For this situation, it is hard to only give him one or two lessons, since that would be the whole class anyway- not sure how this is going to work but I am flexible and I know he is capable...should be a good situation! Just nervous about it!

Re: Having a student teacher?
This is what my cooperating teacher did: Week 1: Observe class, help out as needed Week 2: Use lesson plans designed by her to teach one or two class periods Week 3: Design my own lesson plans to teach to the classes from week 2 Week 4-5: Take over one more class Week 6: Teach all classes

this is a great schedule although I would speed up weeks 3-6.
I was thrown into the fire (5 classes including an AP class) my second day though.
