Having my "anatomy scan" Monday--what is this?
I'm hearing all sorts of terms like triple screen and quad screen...but all I know is that Monday is my anatomy scan.
Does anybody know what this is, and what it's looking for? I'll be 16w4d.

Re: Having my "anatomy scan" Monday--what is this?
The anatomy scan is also known as the Level II. It's a regular ultrasound but it's quite long and they are looking for any physical abnormalities with the baby. The technician will take a ton of measurements to make sure the baby is growing on target and developing accordingly. Some of the things they will be looking for are:
* The head circumference * The length of the femur bone * Check the spine * Look at the 4 chambers of the heart * Check all organs (liver, kidneys, stomach)
If you Google anatomy scan or Level II you will find more information. Also, should you want to find out they can determine the sex as well if the baby is cooperating.
It's a little nerve wracking because you want to know that everything is fine and developing BUT at the same time it's a wonderful ultrasound because it's long and you really see a lot of detail with your baby. Enjoy!!
EDIT FOR MORE INFO - I found this description of the Level II online. Hope it helps!!
Ultrasound Anatomy Scan Level 2 Ultrasound Details, details! This special ultrasound gives you a very specific glimpse of your growing baby. What it screens for: The ultrasound anatomy scan, or level 2 ultrasound, is an amazingly interesting experience for parents-to-be. Your baby will be measured from crown to rump (and what a cute rump it is!), around her middle, around her head — and that's just for starters. The four chambers of the heart will be viewed, as well as the kidneys, bladder, stomach, brain, spine, and sex organs (be sure to tell your sonographer if you don't want to know what he or she sees — or doesn't see!). Measurements are taken to make sure your baby is growing appropriately (and that his or her gestational age is still on target). A survey of the organs, including the umbilical cord, ensures that they are developing normally (or identifies any potential problems as soon as possible). The sonographer will also be looking at your amniotic fluid levels, the location of the placenta, and the fetal heart rate. Settle in to enjoy the show: The detailed level 2 scan can take 30 to 45 minutes (depending on how cooperative your little one wants to be during the photo shoot).

That is early for the anatomy scan but I doubt you would get an u/s just to determine gender. My OB wouldn't do that, they will tell you what you're having but only as part of a routine u/s that needs to be performed for other reasons.

Re: Having my "anatomy scan" Monday--what is this?
I had that one this time. They didn't offer it during my first pg, 4 years ago.
They just view all major organs and do alot of measurements.
I was able to see that we were having a boy instantly.
Good Luck!

My next appt will be when I am 16w 5d but I am not having an ultrasound, just a blood test... At my 20 week appt that is when they're doing the anatomy scan. That's the one I am looking forward to!

Re: Having my "anatomy scan" Monday--what is this?
I'm having a full anatomy scan on Tuesday, but as of now, I'm not having a Level II. Every practice is different. Level II sonos aren't performed until 18-22 weeks. The full anatomy scan is similar to a Level II, but is performed earlier. I think a different machine may also be used for a Level II. Good luck!

The Level II and the Anatomy scan are the exact same thing. A regular u/s machine is what is used. Level II is what they use to refer to it as but there is no difference between them and they are usually performed between 18-22 weeks.
This was taken from online..............
What is the Level II ultrasound? Its origins are in the early days of ultrasound where a more detailed ultrasound examination was performed to explain the abnormal results of a screening blood test, called the Triple Test or MSAFP Blood Test. To explain some of those results, a 'Level II' study was performed.
Physicians still use the term 'Level II' because it is a convenient short-hand way of communicating to and among pregnant women, even though the purpose of the 'Level II' has changed.
A scan is performed at 18 to 20 weeks when the fetus is large enough for an accurate survey of the fetal anatomy, and when dates and growth can also be assessed. After your baby's heartbeat is checked, the main purpose of this scan is to check your baby's anatomy for normality. A thorough examination of your baby's brain, heart, spine, kidneys, organs and limbs will be undertaken. The placenta will be checked for its position, and measurements of your baby will be performed to ensure it is growing normally. Further scans may be necessary if abnormalities are suspected.
Level II scans are also known by other names like, dating, anomaly or targeted scan.

P.S. - Based on your due date you're way too early for an anatomy scan, the baby is too small and they are not performed that early. You're probably just having your Ultra Screen which is a regular sonogram and where they prick your finger for some blood work but full anatomy scans are not until you are a few weeks into your 2nd trimester.

No, I'm having an anatomy scan. I had my ultrascreen 3 weeks ago. An anatomy scan and Level II are two different things. I went through this with my doctor. As long as everything is ok with the anatomy scan, I won't be having a Level II.
ETA: The reason why I said a different machine may be used is b/c I'll be having the anatomy scan at my doctor's office, but if I had a Level II, I'd have to have it done at an outside facility.

Anatomy scans and Level II's are the same thing. Anatomy scan is just another name for the Level II. Trust me, I had mine 9 weeks ago and depending on what OB in my practice I spoke with they referred to it as the anatomy scan or the Level II......there is no difference and there is no special u/s machine for it. It's just a regular sono with a ton of measurements taken. If you check any pregnancy book or even Google the two you will find they are the same. I found the below online as well.
The more-detailed level 2 sonogram (also called an anatomy scan) is typically performed between 18 and 22 weeks and gives your practitioner more crucial information about what’s going on in that belly of yours. For example, it can measure the size of the fetus and evaluate your baby’s major organs to make sure they’ve formed properly. It can also determine the amount of amniotic fluid (the magic potion that feeds and protects your baby) to make sure there’s enough. A level 2 ultrasound can also detect cervical changes that might indicate preterm labor and show whether the baby is in a breech position. Ultrasound can even evaluate the size and condition of your placenta and will give your practitioner a picture (literally) of the overall health of your baby and your pregnancy.

Some practices perform 2 anatomy scans: 1 earlier scan around 16 weeks and then a Level II, which is performed between 18 and 22 weeks. Many doctors simply "jump ahead" and perform the Level II.
The Level II is a higher resolution scan. The ultrasound machine at my doctor's office must not have a high enough resolution to perform a Level II scan, which is why I'd have to go to an outside facility if I were to have a Level II sono.
I understand that a Level II may also be called an anatomy scan. However, I'm getting an anatomy scan this week, which is NOT a Level II. When my doctor told me I'd be getting a full anatomy scan, I asked her if it was the Level II and she said no. As long as everything is ok with this anatomy scan (praying it is), I won't be getting a Level II. I live in CT and apparently, it's more common here to have this earlier anatomy scan as opposed to a Level II.
Other than the fact that it's being done earlier than a Level II would be done and that the machine at my doctor's office is capable of performing this scan, I'm not sure of the exact differences between my anatomy scan and a Level II. If Mrs. Rivera is having an anatomy scan done this week too, I assume she's having a similar sono to mine since we are about a week apart.

Re: Having my "anatomy scan" Monday--what is this?
My OB's practice also performs 2 anatomy scans. I had my first one at just over 16 weeks, and that he always referred to as the anatomy. We found out the sex and they took a lot of measurements, spent a lot of time looking at the heart, kidneys, bladder, brain, everything. At 20 weeks, I go for what he calls the second part of the anatomy scan, and what is commonly referred to as the Level II. It is basically the same thing, but more has developed by 20 weeks. I got some 4D pics at the 16 week scan and they are awesome! At the 16 week appoint, they also took blood to do the AFP, quad screen, second part of the ultrascreen...I think those are all similar with different names. I got revised results for down syndrome and trisomy, and also go results for spina bifida.
Good luck and enjoy seeing your little one for so long!

AHHHHHHHH ok, this is really helpful! Maybe that's what my OB is doing, too...I'm going to call the office and find out what the exam is for so that DH can plan his afternoon accordingly--I hope we can find out the sex today!!!
