Health insurance - prescription coverage WWYD?
Just looking for some advice here...
My health insurance is due for renewal and I can opt to not have prescription coverage or to have prescription coverage. If I opt to NOT take the coverage I will save $2300 per year. I do plan on getting pregnant in the next year so the only forseable script I would need would be for pre natals which may not happen as during my last pregnant I just the OTC ones.
This is a WWYD?
So WWYD?
Thanks

Re: Health insurance - prescription coverage WWYD?
I'd probably opt out.
The primary drugs we needed this year (i.e. my birthcontrol) ended up not being covered anyways.
I bought my pre-natals at Stop & Shop and they were cheap----like $4.00 a bottle.
Although most Obs will argue that you need to take the one they prescribe (also still cost like $35.00 a month WITH insurance ;) ).

As a pharmacist and knowing what drugs can end up costing should you need them I would take the coverage unless you plan to set aside that $2300 to have just in case until your plan is up for renewal again.

Re: Health insurance - prescription coverage WWYD?
I would personally opt out only because I would need the $$ more. Right now I dont take any meds only prenatals which I get OTC. I know anything can happen and unfortunately when things happen is when you dont have insurance but if you had insurance nothing would happen ugh Anyway, short answer would be that I would opt out.

Would you be willing to share some of the big ones you have seen people have to pay out of pocket for that cost a lot? Maybe this will be helpful in helping the OP (and others).
TIA!

Toughie, because you don't know what will happen when you get pregnant. You could end up needing prescriptions that are $$$......gestational diabetes, blood pressure, UTI's, if you are RH negative you would need coverage for the shot for that, etc.

Re: Health insurance - prescription coverage WWYD?
what if you have a baby who needs medical care? My DS was in the NICU for 6 weeks....medicines alone were $40k. I would rather be safe than sorry
ETA: My 2nd pregnancy I needed to be on Lovenox injections, which cost a pretty penny as well

Is this for family coverage?
If it is & you do get pregnant next year, I would want the RX coverage.

Re: Health insurance - prescription coverage WWYD?
i think its good to have it "just in case" but that savings would be 191 a month. i guess like the pp said fig out what you take and how much it would be. our insurance just covers generics. you can get something like that but still have a savings

When I got pg with DS I ended up getting a thyroid problem that requires me to take levoxyl for the rest of my life. I would take the drug coverage. You never know what is going to happen.

I would be too worried to opt out of it. Anything could come up that you need medication for. I'm so glad DH's blood pressure meds are covered- or we'd be paying $300 out of pocket each month

Re: Health insurance - prescription coverage WWYD?
i would take it. if you are pregnant or plan on being pregant, something may come up that you will need meds for.
one of my psoriasis creams that was new and had no generic, retailed for $400 a tube. my mother's imitrex she takes for migraines is over $300 i think for the pack of 5 pills.
So you never know...
is there a cheaper prescription plan you can join?
or if you want to forgo coverage, there are discount plans that you can sign up for that dont cover the whole cost, but give you good discounts on the retail cost of drugs.
