Re: healthcare workers (swine flu related)
WOW. Just wow. While I understand encouraging it, I find this to be a huge infringement of our personal rights. It's not like their asking for a background check or a credit check, they're telling you that unless you inject a virus into your body, you'll lose your job. That's mind-boggling. I mean, I get it from a medical standpoint, but I still find it highly disturbing.

thank you.. some of us nurses are in an uproar about it.. we are being forced to do something that many of us would not have done.. and even those who would have don't like to be forced

IDK what DH is going to do. We've heard you can't even use a religious exemption for it either.

I've heard they're saying this to convince people, but technically they can't make anyone get a vaccine

Re: healthcare workers (swine flu related)
I am having the regular flu vaccine. I spoke with Abby's pediatrician today to get his take on the Swine Flu vaccine and he pretty much said that HE wouldn't take it until and/or unless a few hundred thousand people had it first. That said VOLUMES to me.
I am not a health care provider but I may as well be. I work in a psychiatric day treatment center.

Re: healthcare workers (swine flu related)
I work in healthcare and am getting it by choice. I work in a nursing center and we are the only ones excluded from the mandate. Whether I wanted to get it or not, I HATE the fact that they are not giving people a choice.

Re: healthcare workers (swine flu related)
the seasonal one doesnt bother me, the swine flu i'm a little hesitant about.
But its NYS mandate that all healthcare workers get it as a condition of employment.
I am more pizzed that teachers dont have the same mandate. Schools were the breeding ground last year
ETA: Sorry to the teachers out there, but if the state is going to start mandating people i dont think it should just be limited to healthcare. If the secretary in a hospital has to have it, I think the person getting sneezed on by snotty kids should too.

Re: healthcare workers (swine flu related)
I work in healthcare for the state, and I haven't been told anything like this. I would be so ******!!
I wouldn't have that big of a problem getting the regular flu vaccine, but I do not have any intentions on getting the swine flu shot. I would probably be fired if I was pregnant, because I would 100% refuse it. They have not done enough testing on it IMO.

Re: healthcare workers (swine flu related)
i am a physician and i will be getting it. my husband is a physician and he will be getting it too.
we will be giving it to our 2 year old son.
sure, we don't know the long-term effects of this particular vaccine. but i see no reason to believe that there would be more significant risks than exist for the regular flu vaccine.
to me, in this case, the KNOWN is scarier than the unknown. what i KNOW is that i have a 2 month old daughter who is too young to get the vaccine, but who could die if she got the flu. so i will protect her as much as i can by giving myself and my whole family the vaccine.
i hope that health care workers choose to get the vaccine. because if you don't and get the flu, you will take it to your patients - not to mention home to your family. and your patients and family may then come into contact with those who are vulnerable - babies and the elderly.

Re: healthcare workers (swine flu related)
I work in an ER at a federal facility and we are NOT mandated because we fall outside of the state regs. My entire family will be getting the regular flu shot, NOT getting the H1N1 vaccine. The chief attending in my ER, said he will not be getting it and will NOT give it to his children. It just passed trials, and will be released is a new weeks, sorry, but I will not allow my family to be guinea pigs. 85% of parents on LI reported that they will NOT be giving the H1N1 vaccine to their kids. Good hand hygiene and isolation is the best prevention for spread of virus'.

i am a nursing student and this has been talk because we are NOT mandated to take the flu vaccine or the H1N1. I work in research compliance and they are scrambling to get some studies done on the swine flu vacc., but it really is just too dicombobulated for me right now to feel comfortable giving it. I do think I will get regular flu vaccine this year because I wil be in the hospital, but Swine flu will be on back burner for now. It does have a trace amout of mercury in it...I am not loving that!

I completely agree with this. One of our really good friends is a research MD who specializes in vaccines (he has worked on the Malaria vaccine etc) and according to him while the Swine Flu vaccine is "new" it is essentially the same process as the seasonal flu vaccine and there is no reason to believe it would be any different as this is just another strain of the Flu.
With respect to fears of Guillaume Barre those were related to vaccines produced in the 70s and they were never able to find causation.
I am not a healthcare worker but will be getting it and giving it to my DD so that we can protect my DS who is 7 weeks old.
From a legal and moral standpoint the hospital has a duty to protect those patients which are most at risk of serious complications.

The mandate I read that came from the state said that nursing students DO have to get it. It says that anybody who comes into contact with patients must get the flu vaccine. When the mandate was passed (last week I believe) the H1N1 vaccine had not yet been approved so it was not included in the mandate.
Even as a pharmacist who does NOT come into contact with patients, I have to get the flu vaccine. I've been told that I am mandated because I work with pharmacy technicians who do go to patient care areas (never in direct contact with patients though) and I could potentially spread the flu to them. I don't have a problem getting it, as I usually get it anyway. But I DO have a problem being TOLD that I have to get it.
I do however have a problem getting the swine flu vaccine if that is mandated as well. If I am told that, I will try to get a note from my OB that I am TTC and since there are no long-term studies on it, I should not get it.
It is true that there are no exemptions allowed for the mandate other than medical reasons that a person can not get the vaccine. And I do agree with the PP that if healthcare workers should be mandated to get it, so should teachers.
ETA: I just re-read the mandate and it looks like if the H1N1 vaccine received final approval, it would be included as well. It did get final approval yesterday.
Here is a link to the FAQ which spells it out pretty clearly FAQ

The nurse I work with also told me this. We have until 11/30 to get the flu shot.

I agree, I'm an RT and we will all be getting the vaccine. I don't love that they are mandating it, but if it's going to save lives and prevent a major pandemic then I am all for it. If we as healthcare workers are not protected against it, then when we get sick, who will work? This has the potential to be a VERY bad strain of flu for those who are immunocompromised and although I don't love the idea of making it madatory, I understand where they are coming from.
