The FDA requires drug manufacturers to conduct tests on tens of thousands of people before approving drugs and vaccines, but for this approval was rushed??? I'm sorry, but this is the same FDA that approved Celebrex, a drug which was tested over the course of YEARS before approval, then was on the market for YEARS before the harmful effects were fully known.
If it was me, I would get an attorney and fight. I hope a union that represents nurses or other hospital personnel does just that!

Really? I'm surprised I didn't read about it. Is there an appeal pending?

I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure it was NYSNA that fought it.

The problem is - what alternative does the hospital have? They have to weigh the good of one person against the good of many. For instance, I believe the OP is a NICU nurse. Can you imagine if she contracted Swine Flu and before realizing it infects one of those NICU babies with it? Those babies may very well die from it - and the fall out for the hospital from that will be greater. So when weighing risks - it is almost a certainty that if a NICU baby were to catch the Swine Flu it will die versus there is a CHANCE that this vaccine may have a negative reaction.
Also, as an attorney, from a legal standpoint there is not much of a cause of action. They are not required to get it - only if they want to keep their job. You do not have an absolute right to any job. It becomes a job requirement just like drug testing. These things can be done for the public welfare.

With respect to fears of Guillaume Barre those were related to vaccines produced in the 70s and they were never able to find causation. .
Tell that to my Aunt who was PERFECTLY HEALTHY got the flu shot, got GBS and died.
It is a known fact that some people will have life altering or deadly reactions to these and all shots. I'm sure like any other shot it probably says that in the vaccine insert itself. Will the majoirty of people - no. But, if it was you or your DH, your parents or your child that had that reaction you may change your tune. I think it is horribly unfair to force anyone to take something that could harm or kill them. I am pregnant right now and there is no way anyone could force me to take a brand new shot that even the medical community is divided on. I could care less that Dr.'s on this board and elsewhere are saying you should get it - I can't even count how many times througout history both drugs and vaccines have been pushed by Dr.'s and then later recalled b/c they killed or seriously harmed large numbers of people. Dr.'s are not gods - they have their own opinions just like everyone else. IMO - it's my body - and my child and I will have to live with the consequences so I should make the decision
That said both my brother (a resident) and my father have been told they have to take this shot. Given the fact that a family member died from a flu shot they are going to try to get an exemption or quit.

I understand what you're saying. What about teachers possibly infecting hundreds of students, and in turn, hundreds of families? Isn't that a public health concern as well.
Not looking to get flamed by teachers, just a point brought up by a PP.

Well the point of making it mandatory for healthcare workers is to protect the immunocompromised. Most healthy school children *should* be ok and their immune systems can tolerate the flu. But people in the hospital who are sick would likely die if they had to fight the flu on top of whatever illlness they have. It would really help the spread of disease if teachers had to get it too, but for now I think they are just focusing on healthcare and hoping everyone else takes proper precaustions.

not all healthcare patients are immunocompromised. I work in a psych facility, and we are all mandated.
Kids spread germs like wildfire and go home to their immunocompromised infant siblings.

first of all, i am terribly sorry about your aunt
perfectly healthy people can absolutely have deadly reactions to vaccines. it's very rare, but it happens. but it's equally tragic, in my opinion, when a person dies from a deadly disease that could have been prevented through widespread vaccination.
it's awful either way. but if you look at the numbers, many more people have died from the flu than have died from complications of any flu vaccine at any time point. healthcare institutions need to take the actions that benefit the most people.
having a family history of GBS sounds like a good reason for exemption from the vaccine, and i'd be surprised if your father and brother didn't get exempt.

If we're talking about protecting immune compromised people, then everyone in the world should be required to get it because you never know when you're going to have contact with a person that is HIV+. On that note there are thousands of kids in the school system right now that were born HIV+, and as someone pointed out teachers aren't being mandated, so how is it protecting immune compromised people?? What about the members of the general population that have lupus?? They're immune compromised, don't we care about them?? The whole thing is one big slippery slope.

vaccine makers and federal government have been granted immunity for any new vaccine related problems. They are saved

I've heard they're saying this to convince people, but technically they can't make anyone get a vaccine
I work in healthcare and nobody has said anything to me yet. I have refused the vaccine in the past and just had to sign something. I wonder if its going to be the same thing this year

Sorry to crash your board - but working in the health care field as an RN. I am refusing both vaccines (we are ttc) and I feel its not just the people in the hospital that come into contact with the pts. What about patients family and friends that come to visit and don't wash their hands or their kids/grandkids that went to school with the sick kids and now are hugging and touching the patients. If anything I'd say they should make it optional and if they make it a mandate. Everyone should have to. Man woman child. What's fair is fair...its completely against our civil liberties to FORCE us to put something into our bodies that years from now may prove carcinogenic or have otherwise terrible effects

depending on what kind of institution you work for, it is NOT going to be the same this year
ETA: There is a good link on the first page of this thread with FAQ which will help you figure out if your institution applies

Re: healthcare workers (swine flu related)
I know of a mother whose child ( who has SMA spinal muscular aptrophy) caught swine flu and was in the picu for 2 weeks the doctors there told her that it is no more serious than the regular flu, Also I was told by my daughters doctors not to give her this vaccine (my daughter has SMA as well and a common cold could kill her) but the vaccine is very damaging to children in her state and actually weekens them
