Re: Healthy weight gain by week and/or month?
Every Dr. is different, some see no problem with you putting on 50 lbs, others would - You have to do what you feel is best for YOU - I agree that just b/c I'm pregnant doesn't mean 'this is the only time in my life I'm allowed to be fat so I'm going to eat whatever I want and gain 50 lbs' .....but an additional 50 lbs on me would make me extremely uncomfortable and unhappy - I would NOT be the happy pregnant woman or the elated post pregnancy Mommy if I let myself pack on 50 lbs -
But every person is different -
I'm only 5'2" and I started this pregnancy being about 30 lbs over what my 'comfortable' weight is based on MY standars of where I'M comfortable with myself - .....so I'm in NO position to be gaining 50 lbs - Depriving myself of Hagen daz isn't going to hurt the baby - and skipping out on that random craving isn't going to hurt the baby either .......
Your body is gaining for a reason - you're eating healthy, but you are normally very thin and in great shape - Maybe your body needs those extra lbs right now? - What about talking to the Dr. about WHAT you're eating - keep a log if you have to and show him/her - and if he's still on your case about it, ask him what you could/should cut out or replace something with? -
I can understand your concern about gaining too much b/c you're very consciosu of your body and weight normally - but, if you're doing everything 'right' and you're still gaining - I'm SURE it will come off just as easily/quickly when the pregnancy is over and your body no longer 'needs' the extra lbs ........

Re: Healthy weight gain by week and/or month?
Honestly, I'm having the same issues you are, its a little easier now, since I'm showing very much now FINALLY but it took a while for me to show and I just kept gaining weight...I am completely NOT in the mindset that this is the only time I can get away with eating anything I want, bc that is honestly not true. A. You're still trying to supply the best nutrition for the child growing inside of you and B. You are also going to have to take it off after the baby is here, and the more weight you put on, for SOME ppl, the harder it is to take off...I've said this before...I think everyone's body will put on the weight it needs....Unless you go seriously insane and gorge yourself on cr*p your body is putting on the weight it needs...I don't get it, bc I definitely didn't need the weight in my azz hips and arms..but, I also know I'm not going insane with food, and acting like I'm a kid in a candy store..Sure I'm taking a bit more liberties than I would normally, but far from nuts...so I'm trying to wrap my head around the weight gain and just keep saying to myself I will lose it easily afterwards... Everyone is telling me that I will, I was tall and slim to begin with, and I'm pretty active and hyper so I'm hoping if BFing works for me plus my activitiy level and eating habits will help me lose it!!! try not to sweat it (i know its easier said than done) but I think in the end it will all even out and you'll be fine!!!

Ok I've got to say it
STOP IT, STOP IT, STOP IT!!!!
You need to stop ASAP obsessing over your weight. I read your posts about your weight, no belly, dad's comments, how much weight, maternity clothes not fitting, etc. Relax and start enjoying your pregnancy. I don't know your whole story but you really need to stop thinking about weight so much. First off, stop weighing yourself at home. Its not doing any help to you. You will get a belly, your weight will tapper. You are half way done with your pregnancy. For your sake and the babys, please enjoy the next half and put all this weight crap behind you.

I am not understanding something - you are concerned because it looks like you have no belly yet and your doctor is raising concerns about your weight gain??
Yes-- not really showing that much, yet, still gaining weight. Enough for my doc to say something to me-- I wonder what would have happened if I had my appt yesterday-- if he would have mentioned something at all.
Hmmm I guess every Dr has different ideas. I was overweight to begin with, have gained 28 lbs at 27 weeks(with twins) and my Dr has not said anything! has your pressure been high? That might be why they would say something-all my vitals have been pretty much perfect. In fact I even asked my Dr about weight and he said don't change a thing- he said you are doing everything absolutely right. I think everyone will gain what they gain within a few pounds or so no matter what you eat. I have added more vegetables and fruits and water to my diet but other than that have not changed it a whole lot.
ETA: also maybe you were a bit underweight before? And your body is holding on to the extra calories somewhat like whne you go a strict diet and they say your metabolism will slow down to hold on to extra calories?

After all, how are you supposed to monitor yourself if you only have the total number of pounds you are supposed to gain at the END of your pregnancy.
I think this is a GREAT question.
Doctors are very quick with guidelines of how much total weight to gain, and (in my experience anyway, they are very quick to tell me when I've gained to much too fast) but yet there is no week-by-week guide to gaining weight. Even a trimester one would be good.
I am with you - I DON'T believe that pregnancy means you can eat whatever you want and you're NOT eating for two. You are eating for 1 and an infant. More along the lines of two extra glasses of milk, not two extra helpings of mac-n-cheese.
I am 18 weeks and up 2lbs. I was told by the mid-wife last night that she would like to see a little more gain. I understand why she is saying that but I learned from my first pregnancy - I gained around 50lbs and was told I gained too much too fast. So I am monitoring my weight gain much more carefully this time around. She said she wants me to gain between 20-30lbs total. And that is my goal.
In the end though, she did say that what matters most is that I'm eating healthily, not the number on the scale.
I know my body. And I know that you put on weight FIERCELY at the end of the pregnancy. There is nothing you can do to stop it so I am not concerned at all.
I think what you need to do is get to a place where you feel that you are eating healthy and are not gaining too much or too little - and then let go a little, stop obsessing. If you do gain 50lbs - SO what? It's not the end of the world and it WILL come off. I lost 30lbs in the first 2 weeks after delivery.

Re: Healthy weight gain by week and/or month?
I have been putting on a little too much, but my doc hasn't said a word. I am 17 weeks, but I have been preg for 18 weeks (baby is measuring behind so they recalculated my due date) and I have gained about 15 lbs. so far. My belly is getting big, but I feel as though I have gained elsewhere too. I definitely have been eating too much, but I am trying my hardest to exercise to balance it out. Hopefully I am not too far over 35 lbs at the end.

Re: Healthy weight gain by week and/or month?
I think you should eat when you are hungry, that is the babys way of saying they are hungry, from past posts you sound like you are eating pretty healthy, I really wouldnt stress about it, some dr.s i guess are different about weight gain...

Re: Healthy weight gain by week and/or month?
I think some people just gain more weight than others during pregnancy- regarless of what you eat. You can be super conscious of your intakes, and still put on 50lbs- maybe it will be easier to loose. I dont think this is a time to count calories or to be overly concerned with weight gain. If everything is done in moderation it will all work out in the end.

My OB hasn't said a word about my gain....He knows that 1) I'm carrying twins; and 2) I had OHSS. All he said was "don't go crazy". I think I love him.

I don't understand how my concerns are different than other concerns that people have when pregnant. I don't obsess over every pain, twitch, additional symptom, etc. While sometimes I do question it, I know that comes with the territory.
What does concern me, is being healthy and doing all I can to remain healthy for me and my baby.
And obviously there is some validity to what I have been thinking/feeling if my doctor felt the need to mention something to me.

I agree. I think your concerns are normal and I do agree if your dr is mentioning it, you need to think about it.

I don't think there's one standard answer in terms of weight gain. Some doctors will lecture a woman who gains more than 35 lbs while another doctor wouldn't say anything to that same woman. At my first appointment, my regular doctor mentioned that she didn't want me to gain more than 20-25 lbs. Although I definitely eat more often and more carbs than I did before getting pregnant, I haven't overindulged. I keep gaining weight though and I will definitely gain more than what she recommended. When I see other doctors in the practice, they tell me I'm right on target with my weight gain. I think it really depends on the doctor.
If you know you're eating healthy, I honestly wouldn't worry about it. Everyone handles pregnancy differently. You could've also had a growth spurt. I know my largest weight gain by far was between weeks 16 and 21.
