Heath Ledger's Family Speaks About Tragedy

The family of Heath Ledger read a statement outside of their home in West Australia.

"We, Heath's family, confirm the very tragic, untimely and accidental passing of our dearly loved son, brother and doting father of Matilda, who was found in a peaceful sleep in his New York apartment by his housekeeper at 3:30 p.m. (EST)," his father, Kim, read while accompanied by mother Sally and Ledger's sister, Katie.

"We would like to thank our friends and everyone around the world for their kind wishes at this time.

"Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life, but few had the pleasure to truly know him.

"He was a down-to-earth, generous, kind-hearted, life-loving and unselfish individual who was an extreme inspiration to many.

"Please now respect our family's need to grieve and come to terms with our loss privately."

The statement was reported on PerthNow.

Police: Heath Ledger Was Found "Deceased, Naked and Face Down"

Paul Browne, Deputy Commissioner for Public Information of the New York Police Department, held a press conference on Heath Ledger Tuesday night.

He confirmed the following:

• The deceased was discovered by a masseuse and a housekeeper at approximately 2:45 p.m. today.

• The masseuse was there for a regular appointment.

• The deceased was found in his bedroom.

• The deceased was lying on the floor, curled up, at the foot of his bed.

• The deceased was naked and face down.

• There were not pills found scattered around the room as had been previously reported.

• There were some prescription bottles, including prescription sleeping medication, uncovered.

• Police do not know how long the deceased had been in the apartment.

• The deceased was renting the apartment.

• The cause of death has not yet been determined. The determination will be made by the medical examiners office.

Medical Examiner: Heath Ledger Autopsy to Be Completed Tomorrow

An autopsy on Heath Ledger will be “completed sometime in the the early afternoon” Wednesday, Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the Chief Medical Examiner's office, tells Usmagazine.com.

Ledger’s body was brought out of the New York apartment in a black body bag and loaded into the Medical Examiner’s truck at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

“We’re conducting an investigation,” she said.

The New York Times reported that signs pointed to a suicide and that Ledger was found “naked and unconscious on a bed, with sleeping pills — both prescription medication and nonprescription — on a night table.”

Michelle Williams -- Devastated

Michelle Williams is "devastated" by the death of her former fiance, Heath Ledger.

We're told that "words cannot describe" the pain she is in over the news about the father of her child, Matilda Rose.

We're told she is on a plane heading to NY right now.

Michelle Williams’ Family: Heath Was a Beautiful Flame

Michelle Williams‘ father Larry told Australia’s The Daily Telegraph that Heath Ledger’s death has left his family broken hearted.

Mr. Williams said, “I think [poet] Tennyson got it right in the poem when he described someone as having died at a young age but burning the candles at both ends, and oh what a beautiful flame he made, that was Heath, what a beautiful flame he made and a great talent.

“My heart goes out to everyone in his family and my family. The saddest thing is his 2-year-old daughter [Matilda] whom he just loved dearly.”

Ledger's Apartment Super: The Last Time I Saw Heath

Tamba Mossa — the superintendent of the downtown Manhattan loft apartment that Heath Ledger was renting (and where the actor, 28, was found dead Tuesday) — spoke to Usmagazine.com about yesterday's tragic events.

He said a friend phoned him with the news of Ledger's passing.

"I rushed to the scene, and I was shocked," he tells Us. "It was around 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. that I found out. [Ledger was found by a masseuse and a housekeeper at approximately 2:45 p.m., police said.].

"I went inside, and he was on the stretcher," Mossa says. "He was covered."

Police said pills were not found scattered around the room, as had been previously reported, but that there were some prescription bottles, including prescription sleeping medication, uncovered.

"I have no clue," Mossa says. "I did not see that or ask the detectives. There were 10 or 15 detectives around."

When he went in the room, he says it did not look like Ledger had been partying. "It was clean," Mossa says.

Mossa tells Us he last saw Ledger a few months ago.

"He was pushing his daughter in the carriage," Mossa says. "He was in a good mood. I usually see him around when he is in New York, but he travels a lot. When he goes out, he like [a] normal person."

He says he hasn't seen Ledger's ex Michelle Williams at the building "ever."

No other celebrities live in the building, Mossa says. (It has been incorrectly reported that Ledger was staying at Mary-Kate Olsen's apartment.)
