Re: Heavy topic - where would you plan your escape to IF the East coast were alerted to a Tsunami?

I don't know...would it really affect the north shore?
Meaning that I would think it would come from the south, so that they most destruction would be the south shore. Then by the time the wave traveled and reach the north shore, would it still have the same degree of destruction?
ETA: Clarified my question a bit...brain is fried.

Hmmm, that's a tough one. I would probably just drown, because everyone would be in such a state of panic everywhere would be a mess, and 1-2 hours would NOT be enough time to escape. I too, will have to buy a private jumbo jet, so I can fly all I know to safety Same! It makes my stomach to think of this!! Im hoping DH and I will off LI within the next 10 years.

i would think even if the northshore didnt get any damage, and just the south did.. most likely people would go into panic and that would lead into people destroying and vandalizing other peoples home. KWIM? Either way i think it would be the end of LI.

Re: Heavy topic - where would you plan your escape to IF the East coast were alerted to a Tsunami?
experts say it could happen...
experts say anything could happen! and it could!
i can't worry about it - it seems naive but i have way too many "real" problems that are right here, right now - with me everyday.
so, i would probably just swim to CT.
ETA: I guess it could get me in CT too? I'm picturing it coming from the south (fire island - up) and I'm in Northport swimming to CT! so, then, long island "blocks" it from me and we live life in greenwich or something.

I think the Mega Tsunami scenario indicated that the gigantic wave would come in from the east and flood 12 miles inland from North of Boston down towards Virgina so yes, the north shore is SOL along with the rest of us if that happens.

Luckily I live in the highest point in NYC - Upper Manhattan. I would head home, and have my family (parents, sisters, in-laws) join me.

There is traffic on any random day in LI. I could not even begin to deal with the panic that would ensue. I will sit in my apartment and wait to drown I guess! I would not even bother trying to escape.

I think realistically, anywhere on the Island, you are toast. A major/mega tsunami would be produce waves that would reach the highest points of the Island. CT might be spared though b/c the Island would act as a breakwater of sorts. Who knows though...

I'm with Gerty, get out a bottle of something strong, get on the roof and see what happens.
Honestly, every area has its share of natural disasters. My aunt grew up here and now lives in CA. She says she prefers dealing with earthquakes over hurricanes because the worst part of the hurricane for her was the waiting around to see if it would hit your area. I think you choose a place to live, do some basic research (like don't buy in a flood plain) and hope for the best. Statistically, there are things more likely to happen in my life that could cause more problems than a natural disaster.
