Help - barking "seal" cough
Cailen started feeling warm today and is doing the barking type cough where he sounds like a seal. I am waiting for a call from the doctor - is this anything to be concerned about?
It has been AGES since he has been sick - the last tme he was sick was in March when he had a stomach virus. He rarely gets sick so I don't know if this is just a cold or something more serious. I gave him motrin and he is licking a frozen ice pop I made for him from apple juice.... his favorite

Yup definitely croup. Yes we used a cool mist humidifier. Also they say not to have your AC on (i know, not the best week with the heat). Keeping him outdoors is best.

Are you still there? I can drive one over to you. It's sitting in Joseph's closet.
Also he needs cool air to reduce swelling in the bronchial tubes. I've been through this more times than I can count. Wrap him up in a blanket & hold him in front of the freezer when it gets really bad...when it's cooler out, bring him in the night air.

Yup! She's 100% right. Or take him for a drive at night with the windows down.

Re: Help - barking "seal" cough
We recently went through this--illness free for quite a while and then Dylan came down with croup. I have heard that either the brisk cold or warm steam is good. That is what my pediatrician believes, too. We have done well with steaming up the bathroom and having him sit in there.

Re: Help - barking "seal" cough
Thanks ladies - he is back to sleep - he is such an angel. He woke up, had an ice pop, a bottle, read some stories, and relaxed with me before gong back to bed. He told me it didn't hurt when he coughed and said "OK mommy" when I said it was time to go back to sleep....
My poor baby!
DH is staying home with him tomorrow....

Yes! definitely sit him in the bathroom w/ the hot water running....
and then take him downstairs and let him breathe in the freezing air from the freezer.. that combo of hot and cold really helps them get relief..
when dd had it in the winter- I took her outside... but the freezer works too

Re: Help - barking "seal" cough
DS had this...it was the croup. I would get the cool mist humidifier and give it a couple of days. He may need steroid. It cleared up DS's croup right away.

Re: Help - barking "seal" cough
Definitely sounds like croup. Not a lot for them to do unless he is really struggling to breathe.
Definitely use a humidifier and run a hot shower and hold him in the bathroom with the steam.
