HELP! - Torticollis & Plagiocephaly

We really need help from Long Island parents who have had to deal with torticollis and plagiocephaly. Please share resources with us. We are first time parents, and we aren't getting much help from our pediatrician.

My son is 3 months old. His head, when laying down was always twisted at a weird angle. We noticed that the back of his head on one side started to get flat, so it looked like this / and the rest of his head was round. The front forehead on the same side was much more prominent (looks like when someone bumps their head and has a big golf ball bump) we even noticed the forehead at birth. When I noticed the flat part we went to his pediatrician at 8 weeks or so and he said we should just stretch his neck & rotate positioning. We've been doing this, and now the entire back of his head is flat, except for one small part. As time goes on his head looks like it keeps getting flatter. In reading up on this, I also see other signs such as fisting & open mouth. I want to bring him to a specialist for an evaluation/second opinion, since my pediatrician doesn't seem too concerned, and i may have to change pediatricians since he isnt taking these concerns seriously, I'd like recommendations for somewhere to go on Long Island. I know from reading that some people go to PT through Early Intervention. Does anyone have any recommendations of where I can go to get the help I know my son needs?

Re: HELP! - Torticollis & Plagiocephaly

Go see a Ped neurologist right away. The flat spot and torticollis can be fixed. We went at 3 months for the flat spot and dr said he was too young for a helmet be gave us things to do to try and help it not get worse. We went back at 5 mon and it is slightly better and we do not need a helmet

I take DS to Dr Rosenn in plain view. And he has been great. The earlier you catch these things the easier it is to fix them so def go soon. Good luck and I know a bunch of others on here have dealt with these issues so you will fund lots of dr recs.

I second the recommendation for a pediatric neurologist. We saw Dr. Mittner at Cohen's and he suggested a helmet for DS. The helmet plus about 6 months of PT and DS is perfect!

I agree, go to a ped neurologist. We also saw Dr Rosenn in Plainview. He recommended a helmet for DS and recommended an orthopedic place to go to. My DS did not need any PT, but I'm sure he can help you with that aspect of it too. The sooner you go, the better, but I believe they can't do the helmet until they are 4 months old.

Good luck! My ped didn't think DS needed anything either.

Re: HELP! - Torticollis & Plagiocephaly

I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Mark Mittler.
All 3 of my kids have/ had head issues.

The forehead thing is the thing that I think could be more of an issue than anything else. Dr. Mittler is awesome.

Don't wait....go get it checked out now!

Good luck and FM me if you have any questions.

I also recommend Dr. Rosenn. He was great. He recommended a helmet for my son which he wore from 6 months to 1 year. My son started PT at 4 months and it helped a lot! He had a severe case of torticollis and now at 2 yrs old we only go to PT once a month for a consult.
