Help! I did something stupid (chia seeds down the drain)
I put chia seeds in my water bottle this afternoon, and throughout the day I drank most of the water & seeds. However, when I came home I was in a rush to get to bed & poured what was left down the sink.
I've been panicking thinking of a chia pet growing out of my sink! Of course I googled this & found that it can happen, although chia seeds in chia pets need sun to grow.
Does anyone know how I can prevent this from happening? Should I buy some drano in the morning & pour it down the sink? TIA!

I dunno if it's because I'm a little drunk or it's late but I can't stop laughing at this post.

wait.. its late and I too have been drinking.. alcohol
So.. you DRANK Chia seeds? Um, on purpose? Is this a new thing?
The sink? Meh, toss some bleach, it kills everything.
I think I answered this coherently, if not.. sorry

I don't understand...if you poured it down the toilet, why would they potentially grow out of your sink?
Whaaaaaat.
Yeah dude, just pour a bit of bleach in (I guess) both your sink and toilet...maybe the tub drain too just to be sure...

I don't think you need to call a plumber. I suspect that would be a waste of $$$.

I fixed my original post. I poured out my water bottle into the kitchen sink.
Chia seeds have a ton of health benefits. When mixed with water, they are one of the most hydrating drinks you can have. I've been eating them l week in my oatmeal for breakfast. I didn't have the oatmeal yesterday, so to get my daily serving I put them into my water bottle.

Ok goodness...lol never heard of this so like if you walk out into the sun are you going to turn chia? Lol No, but really use bleach or what not. I can't imagine this not helping.

I think you are fine but pour some bleach and run the hot water if you are worried.

Do you think I should try bleach over something like Drano? I've been running hot water periodically as well.
I'm currently at my Mom's house, so I don't want her to discover sprouts from her sink lol I thought her sink strainer would catch the seeds since mine would, I didn't realize how big the holes in hers were.

You should be fine. Even if they did sprout a little - no real growth is going to occur since photosynthesis requires sunlight. I would not have even thought twice about it. Plus the Chia seeds probably just got flushed down into the sewer system with all the water pressure.

I poured them down the sink thinking the sink strainer would collect them :/

Re: Help! I did something stupid (chia seeds down the drain)
Don't use bleach. Pour boiling water down the drain. It will keep the seeds from spouting if any got caught.
eta : first pour some baking soda then vinegar down the drain. That will foam up and should loosen any stuck seeds. Then follow with boiling water.

Help! I did something stupid (chia seeds down the drain)
Nothing to add other than I used to exfoliate with fresh lemon back in the day, and one of the seeds fell (unknown to me) in my bathroom sink.
Flash forward to a half year later and I had a sprouted seed in my sink, which scared the hell out of me at 6 am. No sunlight. Just plenty of soapy water apparently.

Help! I did something stupid (chia seeds down the drain)
this is too damn funny!!
i truly believe there is nothing to worry about. pour the boiling water down the drain if that will make you feel better.
chia seeds are much smaller than lemon seeds and their spouts are much thinner and weaker... so even if it did spout, it would get washed away with water pressure.
thanks for the morning laugh. i needed it

Re: Help! I did something stupid (chia seeds down the drain)
I always put chia seeds in my shake and pour them into my sink lol if they did sprout I'm sure a lil baking soda and vinegar and a lil snaking would get rid of it. It's not like a pine tree will be growing in the sink

If you drink these things, aren't you worried they would sprout in your stomach?

They contain protein, omega 3's, fiber, calcium, and antioxidants.

Re: Help! I did something stupid (chia seeds down the drain)
Some of these responses are down-right rude. I think it's a legit question. Especially since one poster said this happened to her where the seeds sprouted in her drain.
People eat and drink chia seeds because they contain many vitamins and nutrients in small quantities. And if you don't know, now you know
