Re: Help! I did something stupid (chia seeds down the drain)
To answer a question a few posts back, yes you swallow them whole. Once they expand they take on the exact texture of tapioca. Some people don't like that texture, so they would also have a problem with chia seeds. I happen to love tapioca (bubble tea, anyone????) and am obsessed with chia seeds (as any of my FB friends can back up!)

This thread may be one to tank up there with super gluing Jesus.
That was my thought exactly! It's going to go down in LIF history.
I'm really not sure what the big deal is.
Chia seeds have multiple known health benefits. I actually learned about them from this board. It's not as if I poured a bunch of rose seeds into my water. I made one of the most hydrating drinks you could put into your body.
I came home late & without much thought, dumped what was left down the drain. I had a moment where I thought maybe that wasn't the best idea, mostly because of the gel substance the chia seeds made in the water. So I googled it. And the first three posts were all pictures of sprouts growing up through the sink.
So I came here and asked if anyone would have any tips on how to possibly stop that before it got to that point. Do I really think an actual "chia pet" will grow in my sink? No. But I have seen the pictures of the sprouts & read not to dump the seeds down the drain.
It was an honest question. I'm not sure why there is the need for all of the rude comments that followed as a result.
Totally didn't mean my comment to be rude. I know you had an honest question. So did the person who years ago posted about whether she could superglue a statue of Jesus. It's just that in both cases, they were such random, bizarre (not in a bad way, just unusual) questions that people were amused by them. The Superglue Jesus thread is my favorite in LIF history, so I definitely wasn't trying to insult you. I just love the visual image of a chia pet growing out of a sink, even though that's not what you meant.

Re: Help! I did something stupid (chia seeds down the drain)
Oh man, this brought back some memories.
Many, many moons ago I asked for a chia pet for Christmas and got one (btw, do they still have chia pet commercials? ). That being said, I immediately took it into the bathroom to prepare it and I of course accidentally dropped some seeds down the drain. Well sure enough, within a matter of weeks, we did have a small chia pet growing out of the sink. My mom pulled it out and poured some drano and bleach down the sink and we survived.
So, the answer is yes. If these chia seeds are anything like chia pet seeds they CAN grow in the sink

Ah, that makes sense. I had chia seeds in oatmeal once and I thought it was slimy & gross. I don't like bubble tea either though, so they probably aren't for me.
to MissConfused: they would probably only sprout if your trap was already partially clogged & they had a place to get stuck in for a while.
Vinegar down the drain will probably work--it helps kill weeds ( I use it in the cracks in my patio.)
I get that it is a legitimate question (especially b/c you don't want to mess up your mom's house) but the imagery is amusing. I can't help but picture the Mr.T chia head growing out of a drain.

What is bubble tea?
Only the greatest drink on the planet if ordered at a good place. Having my mango bubble tea fix as soon as I get to work. My only motivation for getting out of bed on Mondays.

Mmm, anything mango peaks my curiosity. I've never had bubble tea though. Where do you order this from?

I used to work in the Flushing area and that's where I would get it. They have in downtown Manhattan as well.

Help! I did something stupid (chia seeds down the drain)
Bubble tea is sweetened flavored tea with balls of tapioca. They are in almost any Asian areas of the city, and very sparse on long island sadly. You suck the tapioca balls through a thick straw and chew them. Chia seeds are different. They are hard to chew because they aren't as solid, so they are easier to swallow. My favorite is to make them into pudding with almond milk and maple syrup with vanilla extract. Yum! I like them in oatmeal too but the pudding is my favorite. They expand in your belly and keep you feeling full longer, and are touted as a super food and called the runners seed.

that is right!!! They do!!! But I do not like it as much - it is a frozen mix and different than what you would get from the city but I have definitely had them there!!!
