HELP! Negotiating Salary!

Ok, so here's the situation. I have been offered a position at the salary of $44,000. My previous salary was $33,992 (YES I know, horrible), so this is obviously a big improvement. I would be happy, BUT when the headhunting agency first contacted me the woman told me the salary was $47,000 and non-negotiable. Now, I'm figuring they saw my previous salary (which I had to provide) and decided that I would go for $44K.

I'm definitely going to try to negotiate b/c the position is Bachelor's required + 2 years exp, and I have a Masters and 2.5 years exp.

Now here's the question--since I know the upper bound is $47K, should I ask for that, or more than that? How much is too much of a jump to ask for without looking ridiculous?

Help!

Re: HELP! Negotiating Salary!

Personally I wouldn't ask for more than the $47,000, especially in this climate. I'd just say to them that when it was presented to you by the headhunter, you were under the impression that the salary was $47, and given the fact that you have more than the minimum qualifications, would they reconsider.

BUT in this climate, I wouldn't push it if they push back. I think most jobs have a long list of qualified applicants, and where I work, if someone was pushing for more at this time, we'd probably move on to the next candidate.

ITA with the above.

Good luck!

Thanks guys--yeah I guess that makes total sense, I'm just nervous! I'm also pretty much 100% sure that they're not going to move on to anyone else. They basically told me they've been interviewing people for months and haven't liked anyone and I'm really the only person on the table--they moved really quickly with it. It's just awkward....argh! Gotta do it though.

Did you ask the headhunter why she told you $47k in the first place?

Haven't spoken to her again, only to the HR woman. I spoke to her just a few minutes ago, and she said the $47K was a mistake she thinks but she will check for me....so it looks like $44K it will be!

I think that sounds like a great salary esp for this market and a jump from your previous. Go for it - sounds like they really want you! Chat Icon

if the headhunter comes back and says that the 47K wasn't a mistake then i'd definately go for that but ITA with the other posters - if they say no, then be done. take the 44K and skip more back and forth. Definately do not go above 47 though under any circumstance.
