HELP please - poop issues
So mikayla is potty trained and only wears diapers for naps and nighttime. Apparently, she has been pooping during her naps and playing with it at the sitters house. Sometimes she smears it all over, sometimes she just throws it out of her diaper. I feel terrible and I am not sure what to do. She NEVER does this at home....
I just got this email from my sitter
"Hey- I am not sure how to put this or really what to do.
I am out of options with the poop thing. I have had to through away one pack and play and now she is working on the new one. I put them down at 12:30 and checked on them at 12:50. Well I had poop everywhere. I do not know what else to do. I am not too worried about the wall that she smeeres it on because I will be painting that when this is done. I am having to scrub the dresser so much the finish is wearing again not that big of a deal, but I have to get rid of the pack and play I have had since Tori was baby and now the new one has had poop all it the netting. It took about 5-6 washing and the netiing on the other one went so this one it is only a matter of time. I can not put her in a bed because I am afraid I will have poop ALL over the room. I just do not know what else to do. Any suggestions???"
How do I address this? I told Karen (the sitter) to maybe try keeping her up a bit later to see if she will poop before her nap or to put her in time out when she does this type of thing.
I feel terrible

Re: HELP please - poop issues
that happened to me as a sitter once...I cried while cleaning the mess.
what does she wear to nap?
gavin's mom did not have any onsies...I went out and bought them his size and he wore that to be the rest of the year.
what about duct tape? around the diaper?
or, skipping the naps?
does she get time out when it happens?
on a positive note, its great she poops the same time each day...I wish josh did..it would make poop potty training so much easier.
eta: don't feel terrible...its a toddler issue. they all have them

she wears her street clothes to nap. I told the sitter to maybe put her into a backwards zip up pajama. Also, I mentioned time out and the sitter said she would do it when she wakes up. I do not think that is appropriate as she will not know why she is going into time out. She already cleaned the mess when she found it at 12:50, that is when she should have done the time out
I also am afraid that a time out would make miki thing that she was in time out for pooping, which may make her regress in her potty training

Re: HELP please - poop issues
I will be completely honest here.
When Gavin's mom picked him up that day...she said too bad it wasn't josh...then atleast its your own kid's poop.
I said no, thank god it wasn't josh...it was the babysitting kid and that's the only reason I sort of kept my cool.
I threw him in tub...then sat him in highchair for a little over an hour while I cleaned and scrubbed. I did not know what to do with him...poop all over...me crying... ..chemicals out to clean with...I knew it wasn't his fault, so out of my way was the best place for him.
if it had been josh...I would have lost my cool.
do you talk about it to her when she comes home?
I feel bad since you like the sitter...try and keep her. I would tape the diapers up.
With the mess, you don't even know where to start...the last thing on my mind was explaining things and a proper timeout.

Re: HELP please - poop issues
It almost sounds like she's doing it on purpose because she likes to play with it. She's also old enough to grasp that what she is doing isn't the right thing to do. I would strongly suggest a onesie or one piece pjs for naps.

I would definitely try the backwards zip-up PJs, and duct tape if necessary. Don’t let her have the opportunity to get to the diaper.

yup, we are going to try the speical "nap clothes" tomorrow, a backwards zip up pajama. If she hates having poop in her diaper that much, hopefully she will call for Karen since she will not be able to unzip her clothes

what about safety pins? 1 in front, 1 in back, 1 on each side....to keep the clothes together

Re: HELP please - poop issues
I agree with the onesie and backwards pjs...definitely worth a shot.
What does the babysitter do in terms of communicating with Miki when this happens? Does she show her the mess and tell her that she is sad because Miki made a mess? I think that your DD is old enough (and definitely smart enough) for that to register to some degree.
Has she ever tried to catch Miki in the act? I know that she is very busy but for a day or two to somehow observe what she does...how she does it? That might help outsmart her going forward...plus the sitter can put her in time out immediately.
ETA: if she figures out how to unbutton the onesie I suggest a leotard or one-piece bathing suit!

I don't know that this is the best idea, she could hurt herself, especially since she can get her clothes and diaper off....
Stephanie, do you think she is having some type of regression of some sort? Am I reading it correctly that she poops at the same time every afternoon? Can the sitter keep her up a nd put her on a potty then?

Re: HELP please - poop issues
can she put her in the sack with legs b/c it has a zipper in the back that she wouldn't be able to open. maybe she'll get over the phase if she has no access.
(onestepahead has it.)

that was my first thought, just keep her up a bit later and hope that she poops prior to nap
Karen said that she puts the kids down between 12:30-1:15 daily for a nap, mikayla pees on the potty before nap but then poops once she goes in
today for example, she put them in at 12:30 and by 12:50, there was poop everywhere. I told her next time, when she checks on them, if miki does this, put her in time out and/or make her help clean up the mess
I spoke with her about it this afternoon and I THINK she gets it, but we will see
it is backwards pj's tomorrow
thanks everyone

ETA ~ maybe it's time to get rid of the diapers altogether?
she has pooped in her underware on occasion (keep in mind that she has only been in underware for about 3 weeks) so I am not sure if that would help, she does not seem overly concerned when she has a #2 accident. She has not had any in the past few days so that MAY be an option too

ETA: if she figures out how to unbutton the onesie I suggest a leotard or one-piece bathing suit!
the problem with the one piece is that she does not take OFF the diaper but instead just takes the poop out of it

I agree with this, I think its a nice gesture and would help smooth out the situation with the sitter.

the sitter seemed fine with it, she said she is not mad as this is a toddler thing, she just wanted some suggestions as to what to do to rectify this situation
