Help settle this debate: Sesame Place = ghetto or no?
DH said that all his co-workers all say that Sesame Place is very "ghetto".... not a nice family place based on several factors.... I told him that everyone on LIF must be ghetto then (which I know isn't the case), because everyone goes! I'm sure it's not as bad as his co-workers are saying! Can you please help?
Great Adventure, to me, can be very ghetto - it depends on the time of year you go. Is it the same at Sesame Place? TIA!
ETA: Please share your experiences - both positive and negative. It may help convince DH to go!

If "ghetto" means a slum with shady people loitering about, then NO absolutely not. I had heard this rumor as well, but I've been twice and found it to be very clean and a great time.
I honestly have no idea how this got started...

Re: Help settle this debate: Sesame Place = ghetto or no?
Thanks for posting this. DH is a cop - works with cops - and their perception of nice vs. not nice (i.e. ghetto) is VERY different than most people's. I honestly HATE that DH can be so critical of things he has no idea what he's talking about. I want to go to SP, no matter how awful it might be.... it's all about DS having fun. DH really doesn't want to go based on experiences from other cops' family trips.
I hope more of you can help convince him it's not as bad as he thinks.
Just to give you perspective: DH thinks people hanging around Ralphs Italian Ice at 9pm on a Friday in July is ghetto.... Makes no sense to me - that's what people do! But to him, it's ghetto...

I've never been to Sesame Place, but I disagree that Great Adventure is ghetto.

Depends on when you go there. We went once and it was very nice clean and we all had a good time.
The second time we went, it was not well kept.

That's so funny because one of the main people telling me it was ghetto--although I don't think that's the term that was used--was a family member who's NYPD!
Still think he was way off-base though...at least the times I was there...

I have to laugh cause my DH is a cop too and I feel the SAME way about him. He told me the other day that some co-workers told him that Hershey Park is ghetto lately too. I really think being a cop ruins your whole perspective on life or soemthing! They are an odd bunch!

Yes, DH is NYPD, so it must me a rumor running rampant through there. I wonder if anyone has REALLY gone? Hmmmm..... maybe it was a conspiracy to keep cops and their families out?

Re: Help settle this debate: Sesame Place = ghetto or no?
We went about 7 years ago when DD#1 was little. I was TOTALLY skeeved. I did feel it was a little ghetto. It was filthy when we were there. Lots of Crap floating in the water and sticking to your legs and dirty gross bathrooms. We left early and I will never go back. I was with 4 other families and they all wanted to leave early.

Truthfully, I doubt anyone has been there - they all just talk $hit but no one really backs stuff up. It's a macho thing.... I'm sure it really can't be as bad as he said, otherwise I'd hear about it, KWIM? I'm on the boards enough to catch bad reviews. I've only heard good ones. I think I might be able to convince him to go, we'll see! If not, who wants to come with me? We can make a mommy trip!

Re: Help settle this debate: Sesame Place = ghetto or no?
Cops have a very skewed view of reality. They are always looking for trouble & everyone is a suspect, especially younger cops new to the job, so I would take anything his fellow officers are saying with a grain of salt.

i wouldn't use the term "ghetto", but it's up there with Great Adventure and Dorney Park. HOWEVER, I haven't been there in YEARS, it could be totally different now.
I LOVE Hershey though.

I went there as a child and yes, back then it really was sketchy. We took DS and it is much nicer now. We plan on taking both DS and DD back there this summer.

Re: Help settle this debate: Sesame Place = ghetto or no?
from what i understand a number of years ago it wasn't very well kept and got a bad reputation. we went two years ago and didn't find it to be bad at all, but the bathrooms were typical for an "attraction" with oodles of people there. we are going back this year so it can't be that bad.
i think some of the camp groups may turn people off too. if there is a more rambunctious camp with somewhat older kids and less supervision then the place can have a different feel, but i wouldn't call it ghetto.

I LOVE Hershey though.
I was just there this week and you're right I wouldn't say 'ghetto' per say, but Hershey and Dutch Wonderland are much nicer, cleaner and overall have a better vibe to them. I found the $15 parking offensive at SP and it is in no way worth the $$. There's much more at other parks.
That being said DS and DD loved the parade and the Elmo's World show, but i wouldn't rush back.
