Re: Help with baby sleeping
My oldest slept in our arms the first 6 months and then slept in between us for a while. The only break I got was that he'd take 1 long nap in the swing during the day. He wanted nothing to do with it at night though. We tried everything to get him into a crib at 3 months, but nothing worked. By night 5, he was up every 10-20 minutes all night long. We gave up because having him sleep in our arms was the only way we'd get any sleep. I don't have any advice, but you're not alone. FWIW, he has been a great sleeper for years. It was a really tough first year though. Good luck! Hope you find something that works for you soon.

Help with baby sleeping
Still no luck. We've tried two different swings, the pack and play, the bassinet, Fisher rock and play, and the crib. He doesn't stay in the swaddle, the minute I put him down he wakes up. I try rocking him back to sleep, giving him the pacifier, white noise, noise that simulates the womb, etc. During the day if I am lucky he will sit in the swing for anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes. That is the only break I get. I have to go back to work in 3 weeks and I am panicking. I will be a zombie at work if i have to keep sleeping on the couch with him. Plus I have a three and a half year old to tend to.

Help with baby sleeping
This sounds EXACTLY like my DS. He had severe colic, was on prescription formula, Zantac 3 times a day and Mylanta. He would only want me to hold him, I wore him all day long, and slept upright on the couch with him for about 2 months of his life. We fed him more frequently and less formula, burping him every half an ounce. We made sure to keep him upright for at least a half hour after each feeding. He would give me about 15-20 minutes in the swing before he was in pain again.
I took him to a gastro and an ENT. There was bascially nothing else to be done, but wait it out. It was rough, and I know it seems like forever right now, but it will past. DS was a completely different baby by 6 months - which is when the gastro said MOST babies who do not grow our of it by 3 months eventually do get better.
I too had to go back to work when he was 3 months old. There was a slight improvement by that time, and I was able to function and make things work. He is still so little, and in a lot of pain. Just hang in there...

Re: Help with baby sleeping
It definitely sounds like something is bothering him. If your gastro is blaming you, I would find a new one. Is he on meds for the reflux? My ped prescribed them for my son when he was about that age and it made all the difference. You said he is crying during feedings too? This makes me think the formula might be bothering him. A friend had a son who did this and when they found the right formula it made all the difference. I would also talk to your ped about possible food allergies. Best of luck to you! It is so hard in the beginning. It will get better

He is on a specialized formula, taking zantac and is seeing agastro doc and a feeding specialist. The feeding is getting better but the gas and sleeping anywhere but on us is not.

Help with baby sleeping
oh you poor mama!! my heart goes out to you!!! it can be so frustrating, esp when you have another toddler to care for!!!!
my heart wants to tell you to go ahead and hold the baby and let him get some sleep on you! Otherwise it will be a vicious cycle of too sleepy to eat, too hungry to sleep- but I don't want you to feel awful if this is not something that is feasible for you! when I had my 3rd, the first few weeks were rough b,c she would sleep at night fine but during the day, she wouldn't take any naps. It would be like a 20 min nap tops . My kids ( 6 and 4 years old) were home for the summer, so my house and kids got neglected. eventually, I started to put her on her belly for naps and it worked, otherwise, I would let her nap on me.
I would def advise to wear the baby in a sling- some slings work better than others. I would imagine this is a difficult adjustment for all of you. as you said, it is a phase and it will pass. My kids watched a lot of tv during that time and my house was messy but I had to care for my newborn who needed my help.
at this age, I wouldn't recmd cry it out, that will def not work - unless it was a" I need to put this baby down for my own sanity situation". babies this age are far too young for self soothing and need you to help transition them out of the "4th trimester"
just do you best to soothe your baby as he seems to be in some sort of discomfort from formula or colic. Im sending lots of healing hugs your way!!!

Re: Help with baby sleeping
for swaddling--try getting something called The Miracle Blanket basically impossible for them to break out of, and really really helped with my colicky, milk allergy, reflux baby. hang in there...as everyone said, by 6 months this will all pass. that being said---liquid nutramigin, axid, mylanta, and gripe water with the miracle blanket swaddling worked for us.

Re: Help with baby sleeping
I know this might sound nuts, but what about the car seat? My friend's son had gas issues and was only content sleeping in the car seat for a while (because of the angle).

Isn't I crazy that they sleep in something during the day and want nothing to do with it at night? I don't get it. It's the same swing in the same spot. Could he be afraid if the dark? I have a low light on. I don't know. I'm going to try to accept that this is what he needs right now and do my best to get some quality sleep when i can. Thanks everyone.
