help with diaper rash!

DS has had a diaper rash for 2 weeks already and I feel so badly! We tried triple paste and desitin max strength already.

Ideas for what else I should try? We use pampers sensitive wipes. Should I stop using wipes until it's healed?

Google maalox for diaper rashes. I believe a few ladies have had great results with that. I would also just use a warmmwash cloth and maybe even go commando a little each day until it clears.

Re: help with diaper rash!

I always rinse my wipes in warm water to get the soap (or whatever it is) out of them, especially when they have diaper rash. When I do clean him, I'm SUPER gentle so I don't just further irritate the inflamed tissue.

Also, in a warm room I try to air their bottom out. I make sure DS is bone dry after each diaper change. I gently pat him dry with a tissue and let him air out a bit with a blanket over him to keep warm before I put on triple paste and replace the diaper. It's time consuming but I find it really helps. A bath is also great, since it really washes off the acid from the stool. I really find that the combo of rinsing the wipes, airing their skin out and triple paste works really well. . . Unless it's turned into a fungal rash, then you'll need to get antifungal cream from the ped.

I found what helps is using a warm washcloth each time and forgetting about the wipes until the rash is healed.
Use bacitracin before applying the cream. I like the triple paste for a bad rash. However, it doesn't mean it will work for your baby. All babies respond differently to different things.. Trial and error, you know? Also pay the area dry with a clean dry cloth before you put a diaper on.
You can also soak him in like warm water using baking soda only and let him sit in that for a few minutes.

Good luck and hope the baby feels better.

help with diaper rash!

I used the butt paste by Bourdeneaux (sp) and it worked as soon as I applied it. I remember DD having a rash for almost as long as yours but it turned out not to be a diaper rash somehow it was a yeast infection a d the PED prescribed antibiotic cream for it.

I found that if it's a regular diaper rash sometimes stopping the ointment and drying them out works better. Sometimes too much ointment can trap the moisture in. After you wipe take something soft to dry/blot their bum... make sure you thoroughly dry each time before putting the diaper on and also just letting them air out for 5-10 minutes as often as you can.

Also, you want to make sure it's a regular rash and not a yeast infection. A yeast infection would be raised/puffy and or bumpy. For yeast infections then you need fungal cream. My pedi gave me perscriptions but I have also used with equal success just vaginal yeast cream. I get the target 3 day yeast infection cream for $5.99 which comes with 3 suppositories and vulva cream and I just use the vulva cream not the suppositories. I would think you could rub them on the area but I thought that might hurt so I just stick with the vulva cream.

when its that bad, i blow dry the butt and put a tad bit of OTC 1% hydrocortisone to stop the inflammation.. and then desitin as usual. works within hours.. DD is prone to diaper rashes and her ped recommended this.

stop using the wipes and call the Dr. You may need a prescribition cream. My kids are always getting yeast rashes and need a certain cream. A regualr diaper rash really wouldnt last this long

change diaper/wipe brands - what brand are you using? I have heard some babies are allergic to the drymax in pampers swaddlers (pampers sensitive swaddlers dont contain it until size 3)

blot the butt with a tissue after wiping it so it's dry and then apply an extra thick layer of triple paste on it - kind of like you are frosting a cake - change the diaper often and do this at every diaper change.

We tried Maalox and it didnt work for us.

help with diaper rash!

This is what we did

Change wipes to non scented or Huggies brand I find pampers are too wet.
Best bet is to use just water and a washcloth.
Oatmeal baths. Put oatmeal in a stocking and put in tub.
Let the area dry out! I have let DD run around w/o a diaper to air out the rash. It feeds off moisture.
Max strength Butt Paste, the red tube.
Then Burts Bees Talc Free powder.
Cleared up in 3 days.

You can also put Lotrimin on it if its really bad. Just am and pm.

Re: help with diaper rash!

Whenever my son has diaper rash, I found that just letting him air dry for awhile is the most helpful thing of all. I give him a chunk of time with no diaper and it always seems to help!

Re: help with diaper rash!

2 weeks is a long time to have a rash, your DS might need something prescription strength.

I used to swear by triple paste, but lately A&D has been doing a better job with DD.

Re: help with diaper rash!

If you can have the baby's bottom exposed to the air for an extended period of time. Frequent diaper changes, and making sure to wipe off all pee/poo is extremely important. At first I would aim to change the baby 12 times a day or more and at every diaper change stand in front of the changing table with the tushy exposed for a minute or two. If you can have the baby stay on a chuck pad naked that would help too. eta: Use either sensitive wipes or napkins with water. You may need to change diapers or the baby could be allergic to the formula.

Re: help with diaper rash!

I was always told if a diaper rash doesn't improve within 2 uses of the purple Desitin, then to call my Dr. Happened 2 times and each time it was a yeast infection and improved with some Rx cream I was given.

I don't know how to get rid of the rash, but definitely switch back to water and a cloth instead of wipes....that's what the pediatrician had me do

Once the diaper rash is healed, use clear balmax on him with every diaper change. My friend gave me this advice...my son is now 1 and never had a rash...EVER even when sick and on anitbiotics...the clear balmax is also a skin protectant...

help with diaper rash!

try just washing your baby bottom with water. If you have a spray bottle you can just add water and spray LO with that and wipe with a wash cloth or damp paper towel.

when DD has a rash i just wash her butt under the sink.

How old is DS? We thought one of my DC had persistent and AWFUL diaper rash as an infant and it turned out it was strep, which presents as a diaper type rash in infants.
