Help..Can a formula allergy start....ETA 8.1.07 Blood in her stool & some questions? UPdate again at bottom & a ?
at 3 weeks old?
Since Friday, poor Amelia has had really runny poo 1-2 times a day, gassy, and very fussy. She's also very congested since about 1 week old.
I called my PED already, we have to wait to Wednesday am to see what happens. They think it's either a tummy bug or a formula issue...
Signed, Feeling guilty mommy for not BF'ing #2...
ETA: Those with babies with issues with milk based formula-what were the symtoms in your DC?
ETA 8.1.07=Just found streaked blood in her stool, and are still loose. My PED is testing it today. What happens after this? What can I do?
Everyone is sick, Gianna is sick, had 105 degree fever yesterday, 103 all night and today. Sorry for all the questions...

Re: Help..Can a formula allergy start....
Both of my DD's have a milk protein allergy
Symptoms: 1- extreme fussines when feeding - crying, scrunching legs...
2- painful gas
3- loose stools - DD #1 had blood and mucous in her stools.
4- very bad excezma.
With DD #1 it took us 2 months to figure out that she had an allergy and even then it wasn't confirmed, until I gave her an egg yolk around 10 months old and she went into anaphaltic (sp?) shock - she had testing done and came back with all of these serious food allergies.
Forgot to answer your question... Yes - it can take a few weeks before you realize that your DC has an allergy.
With DD #2 I breastfed - After about 2 weeks she had alot of these symptoms - Allergist said that given the family history of food allergies that breastfeeding was probably not the best idea for us so we stopped and put her on Nutramigen formula.

Re: Help..Can a formula allergy start....
oh boy, poor babies
Thank you for responding
my 1st DD has eczema, but no other allergies and does fine on milk
Amelia though, i am worried, between the congestion, farts and loose poo.
I know it's awful but I am hoping she has a tummy bug, at least i know she will get over that.

Re: Help..Can a formula allergy start....
My DD has a milk allergy. We did not realize it until she was 5 weeks.
SHe would scream for at least an hour after EVERY bottle, very gassy and loose stools that would flow right out of her diaper like water (she did not have eczema)
The ped put her on Nutrimagen, it took about 2 - 3 weeks for her to adjust. She was like a new baby

Re: Help..Can a formula allergy start....
Last night was brutal. We were up most of the night and from 1-3am with her just fussing and crying. She pooped then finally fell asleep.
She def has diarrhea
I don't know what to do, should I call PED or not. If it's a bug, she's had this since Friday and I know virus's can take up to 2 weeks in babies to get better, but still not sure if the formula is to blame.

Re: Help..Can a formula allergy start....
I used formula to supplement anf went to ped to check why DS was so fussy. They checked his poop for blood which could be a sign of allergy. He was not.
He was 3.5 weeks old

Re: Help..Can a formula allergy start....
Ours started at 4 or 5 mos old if that helps answer your question. Our ped said it can happen at any point.

Re: Help..Can a formula allergy start....ETA 8.1.07 Blood in her stool?
Call your dr about the blood, and keep the diaper, they are going to want to see it. We were switched to Alimentum (same as Nutramagien) It's pre-digested cow's milk formula that usually works for kids with milk protein allergies. Unfortunately my son is milk allergic, so we had to switch again to Neocate when the bloody mucus in the stool didn't stop. But he's been great so far.

Re: Help..Can a formula allergy start....ETA 8.1.07 Blood in her stool & some questions?
Just saw your update -
There isn't much you can do except change DD's formula if it does indeed come back as a milk protein allergy.
I hope everyone else feels better soon!!

Christopher had this very early on, and we switched to Nutramigen and had no problems ever since.
If you do get a change in formula...have your insurance pay for it.

If this comes back as a protein allergy, I am def going to to FM you to see how to do it and i am def going to ask my PED about insurance covering it. I just hope it's just not a NY thing...
Does anyone know how long it will take to find out the results of the testing of the stool?

Re: Help..Can a formula allergy start....ETA 8.1.07 Blood in her stool & some questions?
This has nothing to do with breastfeeding! If Gianna is sick, it sounds like Amelia has it too.
If that's the case, I went through something similar with Maddie & Joe. He got her sick at 2 weeks old.
The only advice I can offer is to keep your pediatrician updated with her status in case they need to check into other things.
I hope she's better soon.

MY DD had blood in her stool, too. They tested her stool and found out immediately. If you do go with the prescription formula, there are several posts from the past abnout how to get paid. I posted one explaining what I had to do. Feel free to FM me and I can bump it for you.
Good Luck

Re: Help..Can a formula allergy start....ETA 8.1.07 Blood in her stool & some questions?
Thank you everyone
Well PED confirmed it's def blood..it's either from an anal fissure or a protein allergy in her formula.
They want me to switch to Alimentum, Gianna and Amelia both will be at the PED's on Friday.
I will def be FM'ing you guys who had formula covered by insurance. I called my insurance and they said the doc has to fill out a pre authorization form and fax it directly to them, then they approve or deny based on what the doc writes on the form. We'll see what happens...
I hope this formula change helps ease her fussiness..
How long did you see improvement in DC when they changed formula?

I saw an improvement almost immediately, and after a week or so even more. Do not let your insurance carrier say you are not covered. There is a NY STate Assembly bill that says they have to cover you. There is an exception to this only if your insurance is a self funded plan. I have more info if you need it...
Good luck!

I hope your babies feel better soon!!
Yes - totally possible to have a formula milk allergy at 3 weeks. We discovered that Julia was allergic to milk (formula) at around 4 weeks. She was passing loose stools with blood (red streaks) in it.
I immediately went to the doctor after a few days when the red streaks continued and my doctor confirmed it was a milk allergy. At that time Julia had many days of gas and crying fits for hours (many sleepless nights because of it). Well - we switched to Alimentium by Similac - expensive - but we saw results immediately. Her next poop did not contain any blood traces and she continued alimentum until about 1 year. At that time we transitioned her to regular milk and she never had a problem since. I would occasionally give her dairy products even before 1 year and she would do fine with it.
IF you have any questions, please FM me and good luck!
