Hernia
Has anyone ever had hernia surgery?
I have a hernia that I need to have fixed. Just wondering how bad the recuperation is.

This is what I have. I'm just trying to figure out if I should do it during the summer while the kids are home, or if i would be better off waiting and doing it in September when they're back in school.

Re: Hernia
I had an umbilical one from pregnancy- but I didn't know I had it. I had to have my gallbladder removed 5 weeks after giving birth and the surgeon found it and repaired it right then and there. 2 for the price of 1!
So I was recovering from both procedures- but can tell you I was fine within a week. You do have to watch what you lift for awhile though...

Re: Hernia
I have an umbilical hernia too but was told I don't need it repaired unless i had pain or itching. Is your bothering you? Just want to know if i need a second opinion!
DH recently had umbilical and lower hernias repairs same day. He was in bed for like 4 days , but you know men! Then he had to take it easy for 6 weeks after.

It pops out more when I get bloated or eat a big mea I've had it for years, but it's been bothering me more now (sometimes I get pain).
The surgeon I went to told me that it wasn't a terribly large hernia and that it could possibly just stay this way, or it could end up getting worse (I'm thinking it's getting a little worse). He said the intestine could also get strangulated too -- which is emergency surgery.
My biggest fear is that I'm going to end up like a friend of mine -- her hernia was the same way and she put off the surgery. It gradually got worse to the point where her surgery ended up being major because they had to do so much repair work. She was laid up for a couple of MONTHS. It was terrible!! I'd rather just nip it in the bud now.
I'm going to go for a second opinion. My DH had lower hernia surgery a couple of years ago by Dr. Geller at Mather. He was highly recommended by some other doctors that my husband works with and everything went really well. The doctor I saw a couple of weeks ago was a surgeon that my Gyno/OB sent me to for a breast issue, and I just asked him about the hernia while I was there.
