I would guess because you aren't supposed to be discussing personal business for profit? Chat Icon There is a sticky at the top of the board.

I don't have an issue with what she did but I can see the point that other people or vendors might have an issue.

She said it was a hobby which would be fine if she didn't charge anything or only got reimbursed for the actual cost of the cake ingredients, etc. I don't know the arrangements she made but I would think that as soon as you charge more than cost of the ingredients, and unless you are donating that money, it becomes for profit.

I think the bottom line is not take business away from the vendors on here & don't solicit business on the boards.

When I spoke to Ron about it, he said he was going to clarify the terms & rules for us.

She doesnt make any money off the cakes. You pay for the supplies etc and she makes the cake....

If she does it for free and for personal enjoyment....

THAT imo is a HOBBY NOT a business. And as such think she should be allowed to be oud of the work she does and and post eher pics

Re: Hey anyone notice sunflowerdmsrn post is gone?

I do not make a dime off these cakes. I do it at cost. My DH will second that. He is the one that is on my back about it all the time.Chat Icon
It was a hobby that I started and I found that I was good at it. I see on here that there are mom's getting quoted outrageous prices for cakes. I figured I would make the cake they wanted at cost. I actually enjoy doing it. Its a challenge and the final product makes me feel good.
I am a part time nurse and a full time mom. Believe me when I tell you I don't have time to have this as a buisness.
I understand where LIF is coming from. I have removed my pictures like I was asked and I am obeying the rules.

Re: Hey anyone notice sunflowerdmsrn post is gone?

What confuses me is that most people who have a business do not solicit.

People recommend them.

What is the difference to recommend a business (plumber, photographers, etc..) and recommending someone who is a poster?

Because you are a poster, nobody can recommend you? But it's OK to recommend a non member like a BIL, etc..

I mean I have a business and most people know what I do.

A mom posted about a good experience she had with me. Does that mean she could be banned?

That's reaching a bit far.

I do feel we should not advertise for our business but this is also about helping others.

Even if I was a vendor (which I may still do!!!), I can't stop someone from referring a competitor. That's life!!!

Hmmm, this is interesting. If she really isn't making any money off the cakes and it is literally the cost of the ingredients, etc. and there is no profit then I don't understand the issue and the pinned explanation doesn't really help.Chat Icon

I know. I find it confusing too. I can (and did) recommend a local plumber to someone. She FM'd me and I sent her his name and number. Maybe the difference is keeping it off of the boards? It isn't just about making a profit. From my conversation with Ron, it's about taking business away from vendors, but the I didn't see a bakery in the business directory (unless I missed it). The note says if they make an exception for one than they need to make exceptions for all. So maybe another bakery isn't the issue? Soliciting business sounds like it is the problem. I know an amazing knitter on this board and approached her about making something for me. She didn't advertise, I approached her. Maybe that is the difference? Someone approached me about doing something for them and I wanted to recommend someone on the board but was worried about getting that poster in trouble.

I wish I knew the answers, but I don't think there are any concrete ones.

Eta. Maybe the quick and easy solution is if you see something you like or want someone to do something FM the person for their email address?

I think that's it! You cannot advertise your business. I hope it is OK to refer someone though. That's part of a family type oriented forum.

But he did mention that on LIW he had friends soliciting business for others and it was problematic. Maybe it's one of those "does anyone know a good bakery?" And people answer? Or someone has a party that posts photos and another person asks where did you get the cake?

My concern is having posters that aren't aware or not soliciting get banned because so many posters repeatedly recommend them. I know there are plenty of talented women (and GoldenRod) who I tell people about and recommend. We recommend based on experience. I started a birthday party thread of the places my kids have gone. Just wait until pediatricians start advertising Chat Icon

That's what I am "worried" about. I mean this site has been so helpful to me for recommendations. Restaurants, landscapers, etc... So if we have restaurant vendors, we can no longer ask for a good restaurant? We only could talk about the restaurants who are vendors?

I have loved many boards. Home, parenting, etc.. I love seeing other people's projects and ask who did it, where they found things, etc..

How is it different from any one else on here who has posted pics of things they have made like favors, candy lollipops, invites, scrapbooks, knitted items, taking photos, etc.?

I am really confused and as above posters have said the FYI does not explain anything.

I feel its personal if you ask me!

I agree, this is what I find most confusing about the whole thing. And I have read the Pinned post and it really does nt clarify things, or say what is and is not allowed?

Re: Hey anyone notice sunflowerdmsrn post is gone?

The poster in question has said "FM" in the past for details on her cakes. The mods have no way of knowing if she is making a profit off the cakes. How would they? I think the difference with people sharing is just that, you are sharing. Not saying FM me for details, which could be construed as soliciting. I suppose if you put "I can make you a cake for free, FM me for details" that would be different.

If they were concerned couldn't they have just read any of the fms to confirm?

I agree too. Not personal. I am sure she is not the only person to be told to delete their stuff. I remember Joenick went through this before she became a vendor.

I would hope that this wasn't personal. Just because there is no bakery vendor doesn't mean any vendor might not have a thorn up their butt about it thinking she is getting free solicitation whereas they have to pay for it.
