I'm so sorry to hear about your dad! I hope he gets better soon. My grandmother had a stroke a few years ago while i was in college (my parents kept this from me until finals were over)...so i wasn't really around for the worst part and the full recovery. While she didnt suffer from a severe stroke....her speech was impaired for a while and she had to go through months of physical therapy. She was back to her old self within a year or less...I dont know how old your dad is but my grandma was in her mid 70's. I think the younger you are the faster your brain heals...but im not 100% on that. After all these years...half of her body is partially paralyzed....she can use her legs and arms but she has no feeling....she constantly burns herself and doesn't feel it...or if she bumps into something it does not hurt. Also strokes can effect different parts of the brain more than others...my grandmother is now very emotional and sometimes even depressive....and her doctor says its because of the stroke.
I would probably cancel the Christening....you are not going to be able to enjoy yourself knowing your dad is going through all of this as well as your family.
I wish your father a speedy recovery and stay strong....things will get better!

I am so sorry that you are going through this. Unfortunately I have had experiences with this. Depending on the severity of the stroke, your dad may be fine or need rehabilitation. He may lose certain functions or have no adverse effects at all. Can you give us an update on his condition? Is he speaking? Moving his limbs? Many for your dad and your family.

He can move both hands feet arms & neck... he just has slurred speach- not sure if that means anything good.
As far as his age- He is 72

He is fully aware of his surroundings- He tries to talk & communicate (He asked my mom for a tissue) He just cant get the words out. He can move his arms, hands, legs & feet.

Janie, I know this doesn't help right now but that's really good. He will get speech therapy and some other therapies. Can he eat and drink?
So sorry you are all going through this. Please keep the faith, he sounds like he didn't suffer a bad stroke. I don't know if there's a good stroke, but the fact that he is aware and understands everything is good. Other things can come back on their own and with therapy and care.

Unfirtunately, I do have experience with that. My dad had a stroke. The fact that he can mve his arms and legs is amazing and the fact that he is already saying words is great. My dad still slurs his speech when he is really tired, but he was able to make a 90% recovery.. I will pray for you I know how hard it is... .

First for you and your family.
Recovery all depends on the type of stroke. If there is bleeding in the brain? If the bleeding stopped? How many side effects he ended up with. They do wonderful things these days with rehab. I have seen many patients in very bad shape and end up with about 90% recovery rate of there deficiates. I have also seen plenty of patients leave the hospital the same that they where prior to the stroke. I would talk to his DR and they will be able to tell you the best what he will need to do to get back to %100.
