Re: Hey guys... I need your prayers.

OMG soooo sorry Chat Icon

My grandmother had a stroke in 1992, her dumb a## Dr gave us no hope whatsoever. He told us if she did survive she would be in a vegitave state and it was best to put a DNR on her.

My Mother and my Aunt told this POS his services were no longer needed, found another Dr, and my grandmother pulled through. She was paralyzed on the left side, but she was fine with everything else.

Praying that your Dad is ok

Re: Hey guys... I need your prayers.

I am so sorryChat Icon My Dad had one this past summer. It ended being a pretty strong one but in a part of the brain that didn't affect overall fuctioning.

You really aren't going to know much for the first 24 hours. All I can give is the advice that another poster on here- Tah-WEE-Zah(Theresa) gave me- make sure he gets physical therapy asap. It really does help with getting his brain fuctioning again.

My dad is doing really well considering. He has back full mobility and his speech is coming along. The first week it was really bad- now he only slurs if he is really tired. He says the hardest part is feeling tired all the time- all his regular tasks are harder for him right now.

I hope you have the same outcome with your Dad. Please feel free to FM if you want. I am so sorry you are going through this. Chat Icon

Thanks for your prayers everyone.

He can move both hands feet arms & neck... he just has slurred speach- not sure if that means anything good.

As far as his age- He is 72

That is REALLY GOOD! My Dad couldn't move his whole right side at first and is still in physical therapy.

I would reschedule the Christening if possible to a few weeks from now. He may be fine by thenChat Icon

Just seeing this now.

Yes, the above so soon after the stroke is VERY good. Fingers are the most advanced physical movement so that is great news.

My dad had a massive stroke when he was 57. He was in a comatose state for 3 days. He never fully recovered.

Usually, the younger the patient, the more severe and the least chances for recovery... I know that sounds strange but those are the stats.

Get him evaluated by a PT right away, now, today... they can give a better assessment of mobility than many docs because that is their specialty.

Don't just take the doc's word for it.

Make sure he is at a good hospital for this... they are not all created equally when it comes to treatment... sorry, but it's the truth.

Repeat the CAT scan/MRI 48-72 hours after the stroke when the swelling on the brain has decreased and they can get a better assessment if there is any permanent damage.

Oh, and get a speech therapist in there NOW to evaluate his swallowing... time is critical after a stroke. Every hour, every moment... it's 3:25, someone can still see him if they haven't already.

Yes, as Barb and Christine said, "With a stroke, the worst is over... it can only get better from here." That is what was said to me over 10 years ago when my dad had his.

Based upon what you posted, I think he will be just fine. Unfortunately, my dad's was a lot worse and while he did recover somewhat he is still disabled and largely can't speak.

Another question? Is he right handed?
Brain mapping is different for right handed versus left handed people. The same location can be affected but have different effects in a lefty vs. a righty.

FM me if you need any help.
Unfortunately, I know way too much about strokes and recovery. I had to move back in with my dad after his and has been his advocate and power of attorney ever since.

Chat Icon for your dad. It sounds like he most likely will have no permanent and visible damage.Chat Icon

Re: Hey guys... I need your prayers.

My uncle just had a stroke about a month ago. Your father will probably need physical therapy, depending on the location and severity of his stroke. He may be able to make a full recovery. I am so sorry to hear about your dad. Its a horrible thing to have to go through.. I know its so cliche but its true what they say- What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I hope this holds true for my father.

I spoke to the doc a few minutes ago. Apparently the CAT scan came back normal so thank GOD there was no hemmoraging (sp?Chat Icon ) There def is a blockage someplace- He is undergoing tons of tests to find out where the problem is.

As far as his speach... He has always spoken broken English. Hes been in this country for over 50 years & never got the English language quite right, so hopefully he will be able to regain some of that.

I know he will be alright. Hes a strong man. Its just so scary to go through something like this.

Thank you so much for your insight. It really means alot to me. Chat Icon

BTW- Hes a righty.
