Hiatal Hernia
Has anyone had one? What were your symptoms? Did you have surgery to repair it? I have an appointment to get some tests done next week, but my doctor suggested my issue could be related to this.

Re: Hiatal Hernia
I had one. I used to get severe burning pains around my rib cage and my back. No surgery, just went on Nexium for a year or two and was strict with my diet and it helped. It is no longer an issue for me.

Hiatal Hernia
I have one. I've been on Prilosec for it. Other than that no problems.

Thanks for the replies. I don't have any burning, it's more of a pressure feeling, and then I feel like I can't breathe. Especially after I eat. I wonder if it's becoming stangulated if that is what it is. I moved my testing up to Friday, so hoping for some answers soon. Really miserable!
Oh, and I took Prilosec last year for acid reflux...worked for the acid reflux, but gave me horrible stabbing back pains. So won't take that again. Took Prevacid last week, but gave me horrible mucus (one of the side affects I read), and tons of fluid in my ear. Medication doesn't usually agree with me! Did you have any issues with Nexium?

Re: Hiatal Hernia
My dad has one. When I was in high school (before he knew he had it) he got sent to the ER because they thought he was having a heart attack. He was having chest pains. After all the testing, and him being admitted to the cardiac wing of the hospital, he was diagnosed with hiatal hernia.
Basically there are certain foods that irritate it that he is supposed to stay away from...which he doesn't always do. If he eats too late at night before he goes to bed, he ends up awake for a while and sometimes gets sick.
Basically my dad knows what foods to avoid and knows not to eat late, but he's stubborn and constantly breaks his rules...and deals with the pain from it until it goes away.

Re: Hiatal Hernia
I have one. My symptom is heartburn. I've taken a few different meds. I'm now taking Dexilant but it's really no better or worse than the other meds I have tried. I have a back injury that requires surgery but I always wonder if the pain is worse as a side effect of Dexilant. I had pain before the med. but you never know. I can't take the meds that irritate the stomach, especially ibuprofen. That makes the hiatial hernia symptoms intolerable to me.

Hiatal Hernia
Thanks everyone. I am still awaiting my test results from the sono, but the doctor that did the upper GI series didn't see much of a hernia. I do however have really bad reflux. Watched the barium go down and come back up. Silent reflux or LPR I suppose, since I have zero pain. That can cause breathing issues. I've upped my Vitamin D3 with the hope that it will help. Lack of Vitamin D (and sunshine in the winter months) causes the muscles to get weaker, so maybe mine needs some help!
