Hip Dysplasia
Hi, I just wanted to hear others knowledge on hip dysplasia. My lab has not been diagnosed with this, but I have a gut feeling this is what she has.
She is only 4, and never has had an x-ray, so this could be anything..
I guess I am just asking the basics...
How did you know you needed to get your dog checked..what were symptoms?
WHat was treatment if your dog did have it?
Did you need to get your dog the surgery?
Any info you have would be helpful, thanks in advance!

Re: Hip Dysplasia
My dog who is a pug has slight hip dysplasia on one side. The reason we knew was he started to favor one side when he would jump down from sleeping or laying for awhile. We took him to the vet they had to put him under to get the xrays they needed and thats what they came back with. Thank god he doesn't need surgery but they did give us an antiflamitory sorry for spelling and also glucosamine pills daily.

Re: Hip Dysplasia
First off, very sorry to hear this about your pup, and I hope she is okay!
I am not familiar with hip dysplasia; however, my dog (which is a large mixed breed-part great dane) had knee surgery on both knees and she wasn't even 2 years old yet when she had the first one done. She had a torn ACL in each knee (aka cruciate ligament injury).
I would recommend you bring your pup to get checked and I HIGHLY recommend "New York Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center" They are located on Rte 110 in Farmingdale (next to Adventureland). My dog's doctor is Dr. Arnold Lesser. He performed both her surgeries, and she had physical therapy there as well. They are AMAZING and they will be honest and give you a complete diagnosis!
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions! -Cindy

Re: Hip Dysplasia
I'm very sorry too! I worry about this with my Labs as well. I found this video on YouTube to show the "bunny hop" that dogs with hip problems will do to lessen the pain when they walk:

An xray should be able to tell you how severe it might be, and what you can do. I know there are vitamins like glucosamine and chondroitin which are supposed to help joints but the vet should be able to tell you if it can help.

Thank you for posting that, there have been requests for reccos for this before and I didn't see anyone with a good doctor for the surgery.
Do you mind me asking the cost of each surgery? I'm sorry if I'm being too forward, it's just that that is the next question on everyone's mind. Especially since one usually leads to the other cruciate ligament in the opposite leg.

Hey there, Sorry I took so long to respond; was not online at all this weekend. You're not being too forward at all. I would want to know the same! It is VERY expensive; however I truly believe it was worth it...especially since I know it was being done by a great doctor and an amazing place. I had gotten other quotes from local vets that had a surgeon come in (an outside surgeon the vet hired) and to the operation and I wasn't even able to meet the doctor that was going to operate on my "baby"!! I did not like that AT ALL. With that said, this specialty place in Farmingdale (with Dr. Lesser) I paid $4,500 for each knee. It did include any xrays, scans, medication and follow up visits AND physical therapy; which includes the "Hydro Treadmill Therapy".
Please let me know if you need any additional information and feel free to FM me anytime; I'd be happy to help. Good luck to you!

You think that's expensive, but the last person I know who had both done paid $7,000 per knee! Your details are very helpful, I'm putting this thread in my bookmarks.
