for me nothing was really a hit or miss, it was all pretty good

my family thought a hit was the sweet potato casserole, the only thing that had no leftovers, and I made it

miss I would say the desserts I didn't make them

Re: Hit and Miss

Everything was pretty good. We were on dessert duty:

Hit:
Pumpkin Pie - Libby's recipe
No bake chocolate eclair cake (an LIFer posted the recipe a while ago and I finally made it, thanks!)

Miss:
Apple Pie - Store bought. No one touched it.

Also, DH's aunt made a corn pudding that looked so terrible that she threw it out before anyone even tasted it. LOL

Re: Hit and Miss

I was on dessert duty as well.

Hit: Pumpkin bread that came out soooooo moist it was like cake! I drizzled it with frosting and everyone was raving.
Jell-O Shots.. Alcohol is always a hit. Chat Icon

Miss: Cupcakes. I made turkey ones. The design was super cute but they were overcooked and tasted dry.

Ugh. Sadly my turkey was a total MISS. It was awful and I have no idea why. I feel like I did everything right but it took forever to cook then overcooked and tasted gamey. Such a let down.

Other miss was Giada's pancetta and brussell sprouts. Not quite sure why.

Hits:

Sausage stuffing

Mac & cheese (adapted a recipe from here)

Mashed potatoes (pioneer woman)

Re: Hit and Miss

I was in charge of soup and desserts...I would say that everything was a miss....

Butternut squash soup: I should have used two butternut squashes so I stretched it will much more chicken stock than usual. Even adding a lot of heavy cream did do the trick

Jack Daniels Chocolate Pecan Pie: My pie crust broke and the filling seeped through the bottom and the pie wouldnt come out. Didnt look like it set properly either. I will say that even though it was more "mush" than pie, it was damn tasty boozy mushChat Icon

Pumpkin Pie from scratch: My pie crust folded down on one side and again the filling seeped through so it was a very "thin" pumpkin layer.

Apple Upside down Molasses Cake: I didnt have a 10" cast iron skillet so I tried to make due with my 8" one. the apples didnt fit properly and I overcooked it

What should have been a take on black forest cake: My fault since i did it last minute because I was trying to compensate for hte fact that the above werent right. It came out of the oven about 10 minutes before we were leaving. I put it outside to cool off and then we put it in the cake carrier. I forgot to take it out of the pan until dessert was getting ready to be served. It wouldnt come out. I tried to go with plan "B" which was to make a quick trifle but my mom forgot her "happy pills." I never served it and took it home. We have been eating it out of the pan this morning and while not pretty, it's pretty tasty Chat Icon

Oh another miss: my brother was in charge of the string beans. Tthey were raw....

Oh...dont get me started on the person in charge of wine that only brought Arbor MistChat Icon

I didn't cook but:

Hit:
Wine!
Spinach and artichoke dip (I made)
Sweet potatoes (aunt said she used a lot of brown sugar Chat Icon)
Italian pastries

Miss:
Butternut squash soup (not a fan)
Stuffing was dry
Turkey was a little dry (gravy was good though)
Brussels sprouts (not a fan)

I think sometimes when people try to make it too fancy it doesn't work out. Keep it simple and good and everyone is happy

Re: Hit and Miss

I think everything was actually pretty good... this is my 5th year hosting Thanksgiving, and I do almost all of the cooking, except for a couple of sides and a couple of desserts) so we used a lot of "tried and true" recipes (and those that brought dishes also bought tried and trues).

We had a ton of food but a lot of it went and I think most dishes were a success. I also lightened up on the appetizers a bit this year, and I think there was less food coma and people had more room for dinner and even dessert.

I'd say the most popular "hits" were:

- The turkey (I actually do 3 breasts, because it's easier to time, and no one but me really eats dark meat) and gravy;

- My mom's mashed potatoes (they were very creamy and buttery and smooth);

- carrot soufflé (family favorite)

- Apple/pear crisp (I made Ina Garten's recipe, but I know from experience to omit the orange and lemon zest, otherwise those flavors become overpowering).

- My sister-in-law's cheesecake

"Misses" -

- I was going to make Ina Garten's green beans gremolata -- I attempted it but didn't serve it because the green beans weren't cooked well enough and we had so much food and I know my crowd wouldn't care. I think I just ran out of time to get the beans cooked right.

- I made an autumn salad with mixed greens, apples, red onion, feta cheese, and a homemade red wine vinaigrette. It's a delicious salad that I've made before, but only a handful of people ate it. Considering all of the other food on the table, it just wasn't a popular choice.

Re: Hit and Miss

This was our third year and we totally dropped the ball. I timed all of my dishes around the turkey timing DH told me. Well his turkey took 2 hours longer then he told me. So although my Brussels sprouts and veggie sautéed started out yummy, they were very soft and over steamed from sitting in the heater for too long. My biscuits, that I've made before, we're super salty. The gravy DH made was way too salty so we would up just doctoring up store bought gravy. Fortunately my mashed potatoes were delicious. I think the stuffing was ok, at least I was told it was, but I don't eat it so I can't be sure.

HIT:
my apple pie...I'm not a pie person, but this is my FAVORITE!!!!

A new recipe I tries for streuseled sweet potato casserole...AWESOME, everyone kept taking more & more....I finished it off that evening, cold!

My brussles sprouts....roasted, then tossed with a homemade shallot vinaigrette, roasted chestnuts, dried cranberries, & blue cheese.

Of I had to choose a miss....I made a pumpkin dinner roll. Not sweet, very moist & soft. It was GREAT nice & hot. I called it a hit, only because I'm not a dinner roll person. I'm more of a dense/artisan bread person. But they were eaten up.

I think it was all hits! (This is why we got to my parents' house!)

The turkey was better than in previous years--not as dried out.

My father used to make apple pie ever year, but then stopped b/c since he was hosting had a lot of other stuff to make, but now that he is retired he started again & it was delicious. Way better than the store bought even though he uses a frozen crust.

A new addition was sautéed string beans with toasted almonds, that I loved.

The biggest for me is that my family doesn't mess around with casseroles. Chat Icon
We had sautéed green beans & raosted sweet potatoes. No mushroom soup or marshmallows! Chat Icon

I only made pumpkin bread, which people seemed to like.

The only miss was that I ate too much! I ate everything but the steamed corn that my mom makes for the picky eaters.

Hit:

The turkey (I make 2 breasts because no one likes dark meat)
Smoky Sweet Potato Souffle (Claire Robinson recipe) - I don't like it, but everyone else does. It's spicy and has bacon in it.

Miss:
Apple pie - store bought frozen, it didn't cook!
Stuffin muffins - tasted fine, but I forgot to grease pan and they got stuck in the pan so not really served as muffins

Hit and Miss

We ate at my Mom's and, to me, everything was a miss. Her turkey was somehow wet on the outside and super dry inside. Tasteless mashed potatoes. Her dressing was like bread pudding, and the squash tasted awful. We ate the rolls and the Brussels sprouts I made. I don't like her cooking much anyway and do most of it, but with being pg I wasn't up to it. My daughter said it was horrible and my Mom was pissed at her. She's 4! She was being honest, all be it rude, but honest. Next year we will host!

Everything seemed to be a huge hit!

Heritage Turkey - But honestly, for $200 I don't taste ANY difference :/
Sausage Ball appetizer
Corn pudding
Sausage stuffing
White cheddar garlic mashed potatoes
Oreo Crack

The only miss I can think of was my cornbread stuffing - I just wanted to try it out but wasn't a big fan!

Re: Hit and Miss

My hit was the sweet potatoe casserole with pecans, marshmellows and a splash of bourbon. It was My first time making this dish and everyone loved it.

My miss were chedder cheese biscuits. I tried making them like red lobster but I screwed something up in the mix. They came out chalky.
