So funny I am almost 36 weeks and my dr. never mentioned it EVER...in NY. I'm assuming it was done in original bloodwork but my dr. is very laid back...doesn't even tell me every little thing they are testing for - just tells me what I need to know. So I'm assuming this fell under the i didn't need to know category. He hasn't mentioned testing/doing any blood work in the upcoming weeks...guess I'll see.

My cousin is due this month and since she's a few months ahead of me she likes to give me the heads-up on what tests to expect and I remember her telling me a few weeks ago that they re-sent her for an HIV test. She said the Dr. explained it as being something the hospitals insisted on now?

I did NOT have a second one with any of my pregnancies (and just gave birth in February so its pretty recent)

UNLESS it was done in the hospital before my c/s, I know for sure I did not go at around 36 weeks because my dr's office does not draw blood and I would have had to go to a lab.

Maybe its not a law, but a recommendation?

I didn't have to do that here in NC, but there is a state law here that I had to have a syphilis test done twice...one at the start of my pregnancy and once when I did the glucose test. I guess each state must be different?

It must be a NY state law because we're only tested once in the initial blood work here in Milwaukee.

And like a PP said, they would probably test twice because the HIV virus can live in your system for 6 months without being detected.

I was told by Sunrise during my first blood test, that I would have to get it re-checked towards the end. Haven't been told anything else about it since though.

No one has mentioned this at all to me, I'm assuming that maybe they did it in my initial bloodwork when they took what felt like gallons of blood for all different tests, but nothing was ever mentioned to me about one HIV test let alone a second... I guess I'll find out on Monday when I go to the doctor.

I am 36 weeks and just had it done today!

They do it because there is the chance that you could have contracted it during the pregnancy....

if thats the case, they'll put you on an antiviral (ZDV) as well as treat you during labor and delivery for it...

Also, if by chance a mother comes back positive, her baby will be on meds for the first 1-3 months until they complete a PCR test and receive a negative results. The baby is tested immediately after birth, but may come back as a false positive because of maternal antibodies if mom is (+)



PS- My dr has only tested me once so far...I was fine, but I have a test on all of this stuff tomorrow so effectively, you have helped me study!!

My doctors office didnt do this.but i do know alot of girls that had to have this test done twice

My dr's office does it twice also....last pregnancy the insurance company only paid for it once.....so i told them this time around i was just waiting till the one at the end....especially since my girls are going to be 13 months apart.....i think my last test was pretty close....lol

yes. i believe they do it once in the beg & once in the end b/c of the window period.

I had it in the beginning and he sent me again about 2 weeks ago at I guess 35 weeks. It was on a script with a whole other set of blood tests. I would be annoyed if I only had to go for that one test, but i don't see the harm in getting tested again.

yes everyone is to have it twice the dr said that the board of health requires the hospital to have it as if tehy didnt take enough blood already!
