holiday gifts at work
Who do you buy for at work?
I'm a teacher, and if i bought for my two coteachers, teaching assistants, principal and 3 assistant principals, I'm looking at 9 gifts! Trying to tailor it back a bit because it gets so expensive...

I was a teacher many years ago and I gave to my principal (which I don’t think is typical but in my school it was...), my payroll secretary, my para, and the speech therapist who worked in my room everyday and also became a close friend of mine.
I had 3 asst principals but I didn’t give to them... though every school dynamic is different. My mom was a teacher and she would never give to the principal because it’s just not something people did.

I’m a SAHM, but I end up buying the gifts for my DHs coworkers. He buys for the people below him, and his equal. I’ve never heard of buying for higher ups, and my DH isn’t allowed to accept gifts from the people who report to him.
I buy things for his 2 admins, and the 7 people who report to him. He tends to buy a nice bottle of liquor for his equal. And I make a ton of food/desserts with a smaller gift card each for the security people bc it’s 2 offices and 3 shifts each, so way too many people. It’s way too expensive and I joke that we spend more on coworkers than we do on ourselves lol.

oh wow i thought buying for the principal was the norm! i started in this school last feb so this is my first year working around the holidays. In first and 2nd school, everyone gave to the principal and at least 1 AP (usually the AP who oversees the dept they work in). I'll have to see what the norm is for my building

gift giving is out of control. my office decided to donate to an agreed upon cause rather than spend money on each other. seemed like a better use of our time and energy.

this will be my first christmas at my current job.
my expectation is there is a secret santa... aside from that, i'll be buying a small gift for one person (the young lady who trained me; we've become friends outside the office).

I never buy for my principal or ap. We give to custodians and secretaries as a money gift as a whole school and then this year I have 3 teaching assistants and 4 1:1 aides to buy for.

I was under the impression you don't gift up, only down.
So I don't think buying for the principal is necessary to be honest.

Really depends on the school. Everyone in my school gave the principal a gift. Everyone. My mom’s school, not so much. I’d just go with the flow of what the norm is for your school to avoid awkwardness.

are you a DOE teacher? If so do not buy for your principal or APs ... they are not legally
allowed to take gifts from teachers and you can get them in trouble.

I have 17 direct reports- so all of them, my assistant, the person who cleans our office, and I always get my boss something.
I try not to go to crazy on staff gifts- this year will probably be about $300 in gifts.

We used to do a White Elephant when I worked in a larger group. But, now I work mostly with men, many who don't celebrate Christmas, so we don't exchange.

Nobody. I have no subordinates and since it is only appropriate to gift down and not up, nobody to give to! We don't even do a Secret Santa here either.

I buy mason jars and make homemade pumpkin and apple butter. I make a huge batch of each one and and bake sugar cookies for dipping. I give the secretaries, principal, my AP's, and the custodians.
