Holidays...Work Parties?
What do you all do for your holiday parties? Are spouses invited?
Management just approved our "party".
We are going to eat dinner at Michael Jordans Steakhouse at Mohegan Sun, and then go to the show "Cirque Dreams" there.
They are paying for each employee and our spouse/SO.
I am soo excited, its going to be a GREAT time!!
Whats everyone else doing?

Re: Holidays...Work Parties?
Knowing my company they wont have one. They didnt last year and made up the most ridiculous excuse as to why they didnt have one. Then in April they had an employee appreciation party to make up for the holiday party we didnt have.
I hope my company realizes that December is not that far away and they should start to get cracking on the planning if they think they are going to have one.

We have a pretty small staff, so we just go to a local restuarant after work for dinner. No spouses.

Where did you work in media?
I am in media now and ours is at Dave & Busters in Times Square this year no spouses allowed. I hate the holiday parties
The first company I ever worked for had their party at the Copacabana - that was fun!

Re: Holidays...Work Parties?
We haven't had a holiday party since my former boss retired. She used to take us out to dinner (no spouses). Due to budget issues and the new boss being a penny-pincher, we don't have parties anymore.
We do have a potluck party at the office for our students and staff. Our students are from all different countries so everyone brings food from their country and it is great sampling all the different dishes. It is a lot of fun.

Re: Holidays...Work Parties?
We have a nice party at a small catering hall with DJ, dinner buffet and dessert. It is free for us and $20 to bring your SO. This is a huge step us considerung our parties used to be at my bosses house! Only problem is this year it is Dec. 22nd--too close to Christmas if you ask me.

Re: Holidays...Work Parties?
We typically do a pot luck in the office, and do a gift exchange, and play games to see how well you know your co-workers (one year we had to bring in pictures of family members or ourselves from another era and guess who everyone was, someone in the office "stole" an item off of each person's desk and we had to guess who's desk the items came from, they've also done goofy "awards" for each member of the staff). It's actually really fun (admittedly, corny fun), but our office is pretty close typically, so I guess that's part of it. Then we go to the university wide party together.
In my last job there were 6 of us, 5 of the 6 who were miserable there (all except the boss), so our Christmas party - lunch at some nice NYC restaurant where we exchanged secret santa gifts was just absolutely brutal - while our boss kept trying to force us all to "bond!"

Re: Holidays...Work Parties?
Just a catered lunch in the office about a week before Christmas which is fine with me. I never enjoyed the company events they had at a previous job. DH will probably have to do something for his staff in his new position. His old boss used to have cocktails and munchies around the holidays and then have a bigger "kick off" dinner with spouses for the new year in January.

Re: Holidays...Work Parties?
We have to pay for ours (city teacher) so if we want to bring spouses we can. Last year DH and I had a great time. It was held in a room at this former retirement home for wealthy people, and it was beautiful. Food was pretty good too, though it was BYOB.

Ours is so expensive! I'd rather just take the $$$ and put it towards an extra special gift for DH!

Re: Holidays...Work Parties?
As a teacher we pay for ours, I think it's $40 or so this year, spouses can come but it starts at about 4 pm.
Almost every year, w/o fail, I am sick the day of the party so I stopped buying a ticket a while ago. This year I'll be 5 months pg with twins so I'm gonna pass again.
DH works for a small company and trust me, his boss could definitely afford to invite spouses too (he has $$$$$) but they go down the block for drinks and finger food Cheap bas@#$%.

Re: Holidays...Work Parties?
We do not have a "Holiday Party." We have an "Annual Gathering" each December. Why do we call it that? It is because we have people in our agency who are Jehovah Witnesses and other affiliations who do not celebrate or partake in any "parties." So we have had non-religious themes to our annual gatherings such as "The 60's" "The 70's" "The Wild West" "Heroes and Villains," etc.
As much as I respect everyone's right to NOT celebrate, we all know it is, in essence, a HOLIDAY party. Shoot, I even call it a Christmas party and I am Jewish.
