Holy cow. American Girl Doll is expensive!

I just spent a small fortune buying doll clothing and accessories for our friends.

A double doll stroller cost almost as much as a real stroller!

I am totally fine spending on gifts for friends but I don't think I could bring myself to buy this for my own child. Maybe I will change my mind once my daughter arrives.

Re: Holy cow. American Girl Doll is expensive!

I can't justify it.
Especially since DD loses interest in toys and dolls so quickly.
I am thinking of getting her the knock off from Target.
She saw them in the store and loved them.
She doesn't know any better.

They are RIDICULOUSLY overpriced. I don't even spend that much on accessories for my own real, live, human children!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

My daughter is not getting AG until she specifically asks for it. She can totally play with dolls from Target!

Yes. I waited for her to bring it up. Then she watched some American Girl movie and started talking about them.
We were in Target and she saw those (our generation is the name) and went nuts. It's all she talks about now and it's on her Xmas list. And she calls it an American Girl doll. She's none the wiser.
And that is fine. They are $30 in Target, on sale for $26.99 sometimes.
And you can get the matching dollie and me clothes in Kohls.

It really is ridiculous. The clothes cosy more than the real stuff at carter's. The little booster seat costs double what the Fisher price one costs. So crazy! MIL used to bring it up but said she thought I'd want to buy dd her FIRST. Yeah, not happening ever. She can enjoy the catalogue just like I did as a kid.

Re: Holy cow. American Girl Doll is expensive!

We went to the city and the girls picked out dolls but it was really more for the experience of it. We did brunch at the restaurant etc.

We have plenty of stuff from Target line, which at 6 & 8 they don't seem to notice or care is knock off and they rarely play with that.

Re: Holy cow. American Girl Doll is expensive!

My daughter has a bunch, but my MIL bought most of them. She's been buying them since she was born, which was the year they discontinued the doll with my DD's name. Now at 8.5 she plays with them all the time but they sat there untouched for years. It felt like such a waste (of someone else's money) but I'm happy she plays with them all now.

I think I like the dolls more than DD. I don't buy the accessories yet. Maybe if DD shows more interest. We have a fisher price stroller that she never uses.

I picked up a doll when the today show had the steals and deals segment. Also, for the holidays, Costco has promotions.

My MIL has bought my daughter 2 dolls, but I have never personally bought one. It works out since I don't want to spend that kind of money on a doll and my MIL is always looking for something to buy her. Win-win for everyone!

They are so expensive, but I'm such a sucker for those kinds of things. I can't wait until DD is old enough to go to American Girl and I will totally admit it would be more for me than her :)

When I had 2 boys and thought we were done, I was sad that I would not be able to experience American Girl doll because I didn't have a daughter.

I was really surprised at how much everything went for. The only thing that was reasonable were the clear well wisher rain boots that I bought for the actual girls.

I met up with my friend who has a daughter and she told me how these were super popular. She said little girls wore funky colorful socks and kids could see them through the clear rain boots.

I took DD to the store for the experience. My MIL had bought her a bitty baby when she was younger. So I took her when she was older tompick out a regular doll. I let her pick a doll outfit, a pet and we did lunch at the restaurant. I won't buy any of the accessories cause they're way too much money. My DD has used birthday gift cards to buy outfits from the Target brand. And we even bought some outfits at garage sales for a decent price.

It's ridiculous. DD didn't start getting them until she was 8. Before that we got her the knock offs but now she knows. She is turning 10 and ALL of her friends, about 15 of them are very into the dolls. They invite them to birthdays, have playdates with them. Cute but it would be cuter for me if the dolls cost $40 instead of $110.

Re: Holy cow. American Girl Doll is expensive!

My girls Love AG dolls. When the catalog arrives they fight over it. They each have 2 dolls and play with them everyday. It's the only toy that they consistently play with and don't get bored of. I do not buy AG clothes instead I buy knock offs. They are so expensive but the quality is far better than any of the others on the market.

My DD is an American Girl addict, she has a ton of dolls and accessories. With that said, the dolls are $$$, but the hair is much nicer than the knock offs, you can actually style it and spray it, and it doesn't end up all wild and weird and stiff. She had her bday party there with 9 of her friends and that was $$$, but I loaded up on 20% off gift cards at Costco! We do LOVE the Our Generation brand accessories, the Ice Cream truck is AWESOME, the camper, the convertible car, etc.

My only complaint with AG, and I have written to them and complained for years to them, is that they do not have an Asian doll. They had one a few years back but they discontinued it so now they have none. Even the Truly Yours dolls don't look Asian even though they claim one is. DD gets a little upset about that because all her friends can get dolls that basically resemble themselves and there is nothing for her. But I digress....I still buy them and DD loves them lol.

Ivy Ling is the Asian doll, and I know you can find her on the Facebook AG Doll groups if you really want to get it for her! I see them new and used in there. I agree though, they should make one though!
