My DD is an American Girl addict, she has a ton of dolls and accessories. With that said, the dolls are $$$, but the hair is much nicer than the knock offs, you can actually style it and spray it, and it doesn't end up all wild and weird and stiff. She had her bday party there with 9 of her friends and that was $$$, but I loaded up on 20% off gift cards at Costco! We do LOVE the Our Generation brand accessories, the Ice Cream truck is AWESOME, the camper, the convertible car, etc.

My daughter is an addict also. 16 dolls later and she is ready for her next one. Thank God I only have one child to spoil!

My dd,got a bitty baby as a gift from her grandparents, but she rarely plays with it. She prefers her baby dolls that were much less expensive and also are softer and more cudly. I just get her baby doll accessories at toys r us usually. And she outgrew her umbrella stroller, so now that's her baby doll stroller Chat Icon

My only complaint with AG, and I have written to them and complained for years to them, is that they do not have an Asian doll. They had one a few years back but they discontinued it so now they have none. Even the Truly Yours dolls don't look Asian even though they claim one is. DD gets a little upset about that because all her friends can get dolls that basically resemble themselves and there is nothing for her. But I digress....I still buy them and DD loves them lol.

They have the new WellieWishers line of dolls and there is definitely an asian doll.http://www.americangirl.com/shop/emerson-doll-dnj72

Ill admit, we are an AG household here and adore them. The quality is incredible, and same for the products. I find everything to be very well made and sturdy.

My DD has an AG doll, a bitty baby (which is her most played with toy) and has asked for a Wellie Wisher for Xmas. We do not buy the furniture bc its expensive, but clothing and accessories, we do. She does only get them/accessories for her "big" bday or xmas gift, we refrain the rest of the year unless someone else buys for her. There are also a lot of FB resell pages with less expensive pieces/dolls.

At 50 dollars a pop a game for DS Xbox, to me, this is just her version of something she loves to play with.

Yes, I saw that but the WellieWishers although cute aren't what her "crew" associate with AG dolls, they are like the little sisters lol. Thanks though! : ).

I can't justify the cost... When my daughter turned 3 I had her grandparents buy her the Samantha doll.

Now she is turning 4 and I asked them to get her the more affordable smaller line American Girl just came out with... because my daughter hasn't completely glued to the over $100 doll yet.

Nope Nope Nope. I have an American Girl store down the block from my job and I can't even bring myself to go in there.

The Jouney Girls line from Toys are us are just as cute and MUCH less expensive.

Holy cow. American Girl Doll is expensive!

We are an AG home but I agree the dolls and accessories are mucho $$$. DD got one for the first time last year. My mom and I took her to the store for Xmas, my mom got her a doll and some clothes as her Xmas gift. I have to say it was a great experience and we are doing it again this year. DD plays with her doll constantly.

I buy a lot of the OG clothes and accessories from Target. The quality is pretty good and DD doesn't know the difference. DD also has one of the OG dolls. I have to say it's pretty good quality. But as a PP said the big difference is the hair. But DD could care less. She plays with them equally.

There are a few good facebook buy and sell groups for AG. I would never pay full price for one, but bought her a used (but like new condition) one for $65 from one of the fb groups. You can also get clothes much cheaper on there. But, we also buy the cheapy clothes from target/tru/walmart.

I also bought her the Truly Me doll around christmas last year when the Today show did the jill's deals thing. 2 outfits and the doll (with an outfit) came to around $100.

The difference is, I actually appreciate my designer shoes and bags. My kids "favorite toy" and tastes change with the wind. It REALLY pained me to spend $165 on a DOLL. Ouch! Chat Icon

I get the allure (and I like to splurge on my kids too sometimes) but they are just so crazy overpriced for what it is.

It's definitely not $165 for a doll there though.

Different strokes for different folks. My child has always loved and appreciated her dolls. Of course if your kid really couldn't care less, I could see not spending the money.

The doll was $125................but it you wanted it to look EXACTLY like the picture, which of course is what my DD wanted, I had to buy the accessories and it came out to $165 when all was said and done.

I totally agree with you though, it really depends on the kid. My DD was never really a doll kid in general, she liked the idea of dolls more than actually playing with them. She's more into crafts, books, and cooking so I spend more money on those things for her. Chat Icon

OK this is fair. My boys easily have over $1000 of pokemon cards and I love bags and shoes. It's bad when you don't think expensive shoes are expensive anymore.

If your child loves dolls, plays with them and cares for them, then it is worth the money. The hair alone is a huge factor, lol, really. My kids really care for them and love them. If they were only casually interested and didn't care for them while enjoying them, then I wouldn't spend the money. And we don't buy the very crazy expensive accessories. But some of the less pricey pieces will also go on sale at times. You can do pretty well on sale items around the holidays.

I actually love them more than my girls. They have 2 each and they are all in boxes. They don't care for them, don't play with them, nada!!!
I took them to AG store last month to see if they would get into it but they just wanted to be out of the store. I thought about selling them but I'm hoping at some point they will play with them.

We just got our DD a AG doll for her 6th birthday, buts not something we will do all the time. One doll and that it! We can get the accessories for Christmas and her birthday but we will not be going crazy. It was for the experience mostly.

I can't justify it.
Especially since DD loses interest in toys and dolls so quickly.
I am thinking of getting her the knock off from Target.
She saw them in the store and loved them.
She doesn't know any better.

My daughter is not getting AG until she specifically asks for it. She can totally play with dolls from Target!

My DD is now 8 , begged and begged for one..............bought it for Xmas. Sits in the chair collecting dust. She was never a doll kid, I should've known better. Chat Icon

DD did the same thing last year. She would look at the catalog and say how much she wanted one so Santa brought her one last Christmas and it's on a stand next to her bed collecting dust.

Such a waste of $$

Oh and I don't think the quality is that great. My mom bought DD the itty baby when she was 3 years old and within a few months of light play the hair coloring was peeling off.

See, I don't think that they are that expensive (granted I have a boy) but I had the first generation of them and in the early 90's they were $88. If they are $110-125 now, that really isn't bad with inflation.

Plus mine are still in really good shape. My niece has one and I have the other, they've been moved a lot in my adult life and they still look good.
