Homozygote MTHFR
Well I just found out today that I have this gene. My sister has it as well. We got this from both of our parents. Basically, it is a blood disorder where my blood clots too much and I think I will need to go on Heparin treatments to thin my blood. This medicine is injected into the stomach daily. I am hoping to hear from a specialist on monday to get the prescription for the Heparin. Can I please have some prayers that this does not affect my baby in any way?
Thanks girls

No, but if I do get a blood clot, that can not be good for the baby. The doctor is sending me to a MFM (which is a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist) who focuses on High risk pregnancies. I think once I get the medicine, I will feel better. thanks for your concern

Re: Homozygote MTHFR
Stephanie, I was diagnosed with 2 copies of the MTHFR gene back in January. Please make sure they test you homocystine level. If your level is not elevated the gene is NOT active. Therefore, no issues should arise. I had 3 miscarriages which is why they tested me for this. When the results came back positive my OLD (and I stress old because I will never go back to him) gyn told me I was at an increased risk for blood clots, cardio vascular disease and miscarriage. His treatment was to start taking a baby aspirin and that was it. I was not satisfied with that answer and had one of the doctors I work for look into this further for me. He then referred me to a hemotologist who asked me why my gyn never tested my homocystine level? With that he did, and low and behold it was not elevated making the gene not active. I still take the baby aspirin along with vitamin B6, B12, folic acid and pre natals everyday because they are still not sure why I have miscarried.
Also, a baby aspirin is not bad to take but going on Lovenox (heparin) is more of a big deal. I also tested positive for something called a PTT-LA which is a Lupus Anticoagulant. I was put on Lovenox and it was not pleasant. It's subcutanious and you give it to yourself through the belly. I was only on it for a short period of time ( I stopped it on Monday night) but it causes bruising, nodules near the injection site and causes spotting (which can freak a pregnant women out). I am not trying to scare you and I hope I haven't I just want you to be 100% sure before going on Lovenox.
PS: My first gyn AND the hematologost NEVER told me I tested positive for the PTT-LA...my new gyn did and said that is why I had M/C'd. If you feel a second opinion is what you may need please go for it.

Thanks for the feedback Colleen(I'm the sister ) This is actually not totally true-if you are on any vitamins or folic acid(which I was) your homysteine may test in normal ranges(mine was 7.2 considered normal) Obviously they need to test the homcysteine levels for her but I am on Lovenox and have not found it so bad. I have not had any spotting either but we'll see. Steph, many many women have totally normal pregnancies with this condition. As a matter of fact many woman have their first baby and then have issues after which is when they find out about MTHFR. Everything will wotrk out. The MFM will be able to advise you. Love you
