Hospital Bag
Honestly, you don't need very much at all and the lists of what some people packed is absolutely crazy. I used barely anything I packed when I was in the hospital. Here's what I used: chapstick, hair ties, basic toiletries, cell phone charger, comfy clothes, baby's going home outfit, slippers. I did, based on recommendations from here, bring 2 extra empty duffle bags which turned out to be absolutely necessary to bring home all the free stuff the nurses gave us (maxi pads, mesh undies, tucks wipes, numbing spray, squirt bottles, diapers, etc.)

Hospital Bag
I agree with above poster. I have a large reusable tj maxx bag. Inside are: 2 more tj maxx bags to bring stuff home coming home outfit for me robe pajamas flip flops underwear nursing bra socks
a bag of toilettries (travel sized everything from tooth brush/paste, face wash, moisturizer, deodorant, body wash, body lotion, chapstick, comb, shampoo/conditioner, hair ties, comb, tweezers/file, some make up...nothing big or crazy.)
iphone charger paperwork that I might need (phone numbers, etc)
some pads and lansinoh ointment
I would bring my camera, but I can't find the plug so I will have DH bring my Nikon when he comes and take it when he leaves.
But if you saw this bag, you'd laugh. It's not a lot. With ds, between visitors and tending to him, there was no time for anything. Plus, this time, I want to squeeze in more sleeping! Haha!!!!

Re: Hospital Bag
It depends also on which hospital. Some gives you everything you need while others may not give you enough. For example I work for Winthrop and policy is 1 pair of the mesh panties per day.
No matter which hospital bring your own toiletries . I personally prefer to wear my own clothes post delivery, my own sanitary pads, flip flops for the shower, slippers, clothes to wear home, robe, flat iron is a must for me, some form of make up, chargers, snacks, bath towel(hospital ones are too small). Camera and camera charger.
This is coming from a former l&d nurse now working in the high risk antepartum.

Pretty sure that's it. DH will bring an empty bag on the day of discharge to fill with diapers and all the other stuff from the hospital.

All thanks to a 65 hour long induction! I was in 2 antepartum rooms, 2 L&D rooms, and then recovery.

Hospital Bag
Wow. I was clearly a slob in the hospital after I delivered -- packed no makeup, no blow dryer, had hairy-a$$ legs and pits because I definitely didn't pack shaving cream and a razor, had smelly breath because there were no mints in my bag, threw my dirty worn clothes right back in my suitcase next to my fresh, clean ones. I have low standards -- used the hospital towels, slept on the hospital's pillow, ate the hospital snacks, etc.

Sounds like me lol. I did bring a hot air brush and powder and blush but didn't use any of that once. I was way too exhausted to care lol. I'm sure they've seen worse.
They gave me a bag for my clothes once I changed into the hospital gown in triage. And that's what I wore home lol.
Not the hospital gown, the clothes I came in

Re: Hospital Bag
LOL!
I don't pack this much when I go on VACATION for a week!
Seriously:
Camera Phone w. Charger Purse which always has my: Wallet (you should have your insurance card & ID card there) & make up bag (I only really use eyeliner and lip gloss) Music speakers Hair dryer & Hair straightener (for pics) Coming home outfit for baby
I'm in the hospital: I use their socks, gowns, undies, pads, meds, toothpaste, toothbrush. I never had a problem getting any of this stuff.
I don't birth plan.
Sure as heck I'm not going to pack anything for my hubby: he can take care of himself. Most of the time, he gets food & whatever while I'm sleeping with my epidural. He brings the car seat to come home with when it's time. He also goes home to sleep. It stinks to sleep in the hospital.

I totally agree with you. I pack a lot too and it cracks me up when they say the hospital will give you everything or has everything. There are hospitals that don't even give mesh undies they have that old fashioned belt contraption. I work at Winthrop and delivered my youngest at LIJ; night and day as far as supplies.

I'm not bringing much, just essentials really... and to be honest last time I just wore a hospital gown each day I was there until I left because I just felt so disgusting with all of the PP bleeding and just threw my wet hair up after showering. I didn't look pretty for pictures but oh well.

It depends also on which hospital. Some gives you everything you need while others may not give you enough. For example I work for Winthrop and policy is 1 pair of the mesh panties per day.
1 pair of mesh panties a day at Winthrop?!?! Damn, LIJ was like the land of milk and honey compared to that. Anytime I said I needed another pair (which was technically a lie since I had more than enough in the bathroom but wanted to stock up for home), the nurses literally gave me like 10 at a time! I wore them at home for at least 2 weeks after delivering --they were a god send!
