How Can We Avoid the Double Diaper Change?
So, we will either change him right before he eats or after (unless it's obvious he needs a diaper change besides that.) Sometimes, when we change him after, we'll wait a good 20 minutes - even if we know he's wet, to see if he will poop first - never will, we change - bam - 5 minutes later - major poop explosion! Should we wait longer even though we know he needs to be changed or are we doomed to double change?
Thanks!
Also - is it normal that he's waking up literally every three hours on the nose overnight if not a little sooner?

My DS is 6 weeks old just this week started waking up every 3 hours.....for the first 5 weeks it was every two hours like clock work, and that was from feed to feed...so he'd only really sleep about 1hr 45 minutes (and eat for 15). Hang in there.

yeah when you figure the diaper thing out let me know. My kid has yet to poop in a wet diaper. the minute I change him boom. Poop.
And the three hour thing, totally normal. It may decrease in hours in a week or so, when the have a growth spurt. you may notice feeding him more frequently. But totally normal.

It will eventually stop. I swear, I never cried so much in my life as I did the first 4-6 weeks of DDs life.

Re: How Can We Avoid the Double Diaper Change?
My DS is 3 mos and wakes up every 3 hrs to feed...when he was a newborn it was crazy like every hr - 2 hrs - so yeah consider yourself lucky =). As far as the diaper situation goes, its tough b/c I find that changing it after he eats = he's up, so I like to change it before he eats, that way he falls asleep easier after a feeding. Of course if I hear him go, than I'll change it rt after.

At 8 weeks my hormones and body seemed to be getting more back to normal--I finally stopped bleeding, and could go a day without crying!

Re: How Can We Avoid the Double Diaper Change?
Oh My...the crying. I know all about it. For the first 4 weeks, I cried multiple times a day. I cried because his feet were so perfect or because he made eye contact with me or because the lyrics of a song symbolized my new love affair. I cried when he cried and I cried because I was exhausted. Now at 6 weeks...I still cry, but not every day, and not nearly as intense. It's usually song lyrics when I'm holding him and dancing with him or it's when I'm totally exhausted from 4 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period. It does ease up....and ironically, I now look back on the first 4 weeks as the most beautiful time in my life....despite the intense overwhelming feelings I had.

Re: How Can We Avoid the Double Diaper Change?
Nope, nothing you can do! They all go through that phase! It's pretty damn hilarious!
As for sleeping - 3 hour stretches at this stage is great. As the weeks go by, he should stretch a little longer...but, especially if you're nursing, right now, he needs the milk that often.
As for the crying... it lasts a few weeks... tooooootally normal

Thanks so much, girls. I think the lack of sleep is getting to me - three hours was last night - the night before was every hour!

Re: How Can We Avoid the Double Diaper Change?
My general rule was to change DD every 2 hours and every time she pooped. It was alot in the beginning because they poop a lot. Buty it eventually gets better.
Don't worry. You will feel better in a few weeks.
The tree hour thing is normal. Babies that small can only fill their stomaches so much. So they get hungry very frequently. Every 2-3 hours.

I'm having the same exact diaper problem! I feel I need to change him as soon as he wakes up bc it must be so uncomfortable and then he eats and then poops! I guess 2 diapers almost everytime is normal?
