How did you know your toddler was ready for a toddler bed?

Ian's daycare teacher told me yesterday she thinks he's ready. Mostly because he sleeps on a cot for over 2 hours at daycare and doesn't move. But at home he's all over the crib, so I don't get it.

Did you wait until your toddler slept in one place all night? How did you know they were ready?

ETA he's almost 16 months.

I think what they do at daycare, and what they do at home are two totally different things.

We put Jack into a bed when he was a month shy of three. I could never imagine Tyler being in a bed now. He's still a baby. Obviously if he jumped out I would do it, but for now I like him safe and sound in his crib.

If he's happy in there, I'm happy Chat Icon

Re: How did you know your toddler was ready for a toddler bed?

Mason is 20 months and I don't feel he's ready for a toddler bed. He likes to throw everything out of the crib b4 he goes to sleep. Loves his crib. Sometimes I go in to get him out and he sits back down b/c he doesn't want to.

At daycare he does sleep great on a cot, but that's for 2 hours. For now I'm keeping the crib. Keeps him confined and less worry for now Chat Icon

What's that..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it." That's what I went by. Chat Icon

My older DD I didn't switch to a bed until she was 3 years, 4mos. My younger one I switched at 3 years. They'd probably still be in there to this day if they weren't getting so big! Chat Icon

Re: How did you know your toddler was ready for a toddler bed?

My DD is 20 months and we are contemplating going to the toddler bed. When she i in the crib, yes she is all over it and constantly waking herself up at night.

However, when she's in the regular bed she sleeps sooo soundly and doesn't move that much. We're probably going to do the toddler bed with the bed rails very shortly.

I've been wondering the same thing. DD will be 2 in 2 weeks and i've been thinking about it. i just get worried that she will want to get out of bed and play and not sleep.

I moved DS1 to a twin when he started climbing out of the crib - 27 months or so.
IMO, there is no benefit to putting your 16 month old in a bed - I could never leave Colin "free" in his room for 12 hrs Chat Icon

He climbed out. He slept on beds before, but until he climbed out, I wasn't putting him in a toddler bed.

It gave me peace of mind that he couldn't get out of his crib at night whenever he wanted.

My DD is 2y5m and she's still in her crib and I plan on leaving there for as long as possible. She's happy, content, and safe. I don't even want to think about her being able to roam around in the middle of the night!! Chat Icon She doesn't even attempt or think about climbing out so until she does or until she gives us a hard time in general with the crib that's where she's staying. Chat Icon

Re: How did you know your toddler was ready for a toddler bed?

If he isn't climbing out i'd leave him.

I ot Ryan a toddler bed when he was 2 and a little because I was trying to get pregnant and figured no better time than the present. I turned his crib in to the day bed, but needed a rail because he is all over the place when he sleeps. Long story short I fould out his crib was recalled so I had to get him somthing else to sleep in while we got a new crib. He did not sleep in one place at the time, but the rail kept him in and now 2 years later he doesn't move much at all.

Re: How did you know your toddler was ready for a toddler bed?

PUt our dd in a toddler bed when she just turned 18 months. It was too dangerous to keep her in the crib since she was climbing out and she fell twice. It was tough for the first week. Now she loves her bed and walks herself to it. I stay with her for two minutes then I leave and she stays in her bed. She actually sleeps better now and thru the night. FOr some reason she was waking up at least once in her crib. NO more...it's awesome.

When DS was literally climbing out and back into the crib like it was a jungle gym, we knew it was time.

I think what they do at DC and at home are different...From all the BTDT mom's I've talked to, they said don't put them in a bed until you need to (like when they climb out)

Re: How did you know your toddler was ready for a toddler bed?

I'm thinking toddlers understand the rules/routines in different environments. I've thought now and then maybe I could try a flip-sofa for naps to get her ready for vacation, just because she does well at daycare but I think she knows, daycare is daycare, home is home. I plan on keeping her in the crib for as long as possible too! I can see her getting up at night and trying to get out and come into our room.
