How do I deal with my 12 month old's tantrums
DS turned 1 three weeks ago. It's like a switch was flipped and now he has these tantrums when I don't let him do what he wants. (he throws himslef back which worries me bc i won't always be there to protect his head from the floor)
If I say "no" he actually yells back at me, or grunts. It's funny sometimes but I'm scared inside.
How do I best handle this behavior? And,how many times do I need to say "no" before he gets what NO means bc it's not working so far.
He's very independent and strong, he surprises me all the time. He rarely cries, even when he gets hurt, he'll just rub the area that got hurt. He's really learning lots of new things everyday, this week alone I've seen him do several new things he couldn't do before.
How do I best handle his behavior?

Re: How do I deal with my 12 month old's tantrums
I'm dreading this day, I have a very headstrong 7m old. I can see whats coming and it scares me!
DH and I picked up both the book and DVD happiest toddler on the block. We were mesmerized by this guys method. No idea if it really works, but I know I'm going to try it, at the very first real toddler tantrum I get. Its very bizarre method, but so was swaddling my baby and jiggling him - but that worked wonders.
You can probably youtube clips of it.

Re: How do I deal with my 12 month old's tantrums
I have/am going through this right now and I don't know what to do either so I'd love to know as well. DS freaks out at anything. Stomps his feet, screeches, throws himself down - I know what you mean about worrying he will bang his head. I usually hold his hands and try to ease him down.
I just don't know what to do about it. If I try to talk sternly or softly, if I walk away and ignore it or stand right there and plead with him, it just doesn't seem to do anything.

DS does this too (13.5months). I don't know what to do either. He throws his head back and I'm scared he is going to really hurt himself!

DD's do it too. A lot of stuff I read says to either ignore their tantrum or if its cause you took something away distract them with something else.

I just watched that before and showed it to DH. I totally want to try it. I went on and requested the video fro my library. I really liked Happiest Baby on the Block, so maybe this will help too.

I forgot about Happiest Toddler on the Block, thanks. I will look into that.
Glad to know it's not only my DS doing this, I was scared that most kids didn't start until age 2. At least he knows what he wants

Re: How do I deal with my 12 month old's tantrums
my ds went through this for a little while around the same age. looking back now i can say it was because he was having trouble communicating- help him to use his words. once he could get his words out the tantrums stopped.
i ignored them as long as he wasnt hurting himself i let him go about his 'tantrum business'.
