How do you avoid spam text messages?

I get texts from 3 people. How on earth would I get spam or solicitation text messages? I didn't sign up for anything.

I got that for a while! I had no idea why. Most of them were like come talk to me on yahoo messenger. I have no yahoo message account. I have hotmail for email. I basically found a way to block text messages from certain numbers. I can't remember how. But, I found they were all similar numbers.
Like 555- 123 XXXX. So I blocked everything from 555- 123.

I was getting tons and verizon had no explanation why.
