How do you feel about car dvd players?
We have a portable dvd player that we put in for long trips.
We went on a week vacation and she is really attached to it, every time she gets in the car she ask for Nemo.
I am torn about taking it out- we used to sing songs and talk the whole way home and I miss that, but on the other hand she no longer gives me a hard time in the car at all.
Do you have one in your car?

NOT YET! We'll get one eventually...but only use it for certain rides (or at least that's what I say)

I don't have one, by choice. Rather not have them get into that habit.

Re: How do you feel about car dvd players?
DH and I have already discussed this... only for trips over a half hour and it will be limited. We don't have the tv on now during the day... there will be plenty of time for that later and it will be limited.
It seems every time I'm at a red light with a mini-van next to me I see kids watching the DVD... way too much passive entertainment.

We have a portable one too and it definitely makes long trips bearable. We will be using this weekend for a long ride with 5 kids under 6. Im glad I dont have a permanent one in my car - I'd probably use it more than I'd want to. My kids are generally pretty good in the car though and they love audio books on CD. We have a bunch of those and they really enjoy them.

Re: How do you feel about car dvd players?
We have one because it came with the car, and I didn't want to have to pay to take it out. My stepdaughter who was 9 at the time, loved the fact that we had the DVD in the car...but we made a rule that she could only watch it if we were going on a long ride (more than 1 hour). The first few trips, she watched it...now, 1.5 years later, she hardly asks to watch anymore (even for long trips).
I don't plan on using it with DD and since my car is leased, if the next car doesn't have it, I won't miss it. It's a habit I didn't want start. But...DH did say we should get a portable one for long trips for DD...we shall see.

I am OK with them for long trips only. I think kids should learn how to be in the car for normal every day things. JMO.

I don't have one and wouldn't ever get one. I think it's nice to conversate with the kiddos in the car. That's one of the few times you have their undivided attention, especially as they get older.

Re: How do you feel about car dvd players?
We have a portable one, too. It has 2 monitors (for each headrest). We only take it on road trips and it definitely makes the time go faster for the boys.
This post just reminded me that I need to take it out since we're going away Wednesday.

Re: How do you feel about car dvd players?
I have a policy of "never say never"
My mom has one though and it hardly ever gets used. I guess would be nice for long trips to my moms vacation home when he gets a little older, but I won't miss it if I never have it.

I only use on long trip like over an hour. We didn't have one growing up lol. I don't want to her to expect it every time we get into the car so thats why.

I agree fully...we never had these in our cars growing up & I think part of the fun of the trip is talking and looking out the window, etc

Re: How do you feel about car dvd players?
We've used a portable DVD player on a plane. My MIL gave Joseph hers. They can use it at home & on a plane.
Other than that, I'm not buying into it. Not for cars. I think it's good to have your kids be bored in a car (even if it does drive me crazy).
I wouldn't have heard them figuing out what object the clouds look like if they were busy watching a dvd.

we have one in our truck and my children love it and if does make your trips easier however we don't ususally use it unless the ride is 1/2 hr or more.

I like portables. They don't get overused but can be a lifesaver on long trips. Can bring them on the plane too.

Re: How do you feel about car dvd players?
We have one - we use it for long car trips and airplane rides, but in all honesty, Alex has never been a fan of TV or movies. SHe watches for a minute or so and then gets bored.
