Yes, I agree but with the plan I pay the first $5000 which we will have in a savings account specifically for health then the insurance pays 100%

EXACTLY, people are so insanely misinformed about their CHOICES. Just like people think you need to lock in a rip-off oil price to get a service contract.
HOLY $HIT PEOPLE! you are going to start BAAAAA-ING soon, STOP BEING SHEEP!
THINK FOR YOURSELVES!!!

does your plan have a catastrophic max that they will pay out?

I have seen that happen.

the plan refuses to pay out after a certain dollar amount is met (say 30k or 50k what have you)

Re: HOw do you feel about McCain's Health Plan

I have a question.

Say if McCain's healthcare policy comes to light and we all are responsible for our own health insurance.

And say I get an extra $1000 a year in my paycheck since my company is no longer responsible for providing me health insurance coverage. (total random amount for argument's sake)

What is going to force me to spend that $1000 on health insurance? What if I use that money to put food on my table, buy school supplies for my kids, fill up my gas tank, or heck blow it all on dinner and drinks for my friends?

If I choose to use that money for an immediate need (food, rent/mortgage, home heating oil), and don't purchase a health insurance plan for my family, aren't I worse off than before?

What is the government going to do for me then? Say shame on you, it's your fault, you should have been more responsible?

No, as long as pelosi & Frank are in Washington the government will bail you out, you'll claim you were too uneducated to know better, just like the people that entered into real estate contracts & mortgages they didn't understand & them dems will write a big fat check to 'save' your ***.

yes there are plans like that out there, including plans that people have now with employer contributions.
No, my plan is not one that has a low max, just a high deductible.

ETS-most people really have NO idea what their plan really is, especially if they feel "they don't pay for it, their company does"

I think the borrowers do share some responsibility in this. They should have known at some point it was too good to be true to buy a $600K house with $10K down.

However, this is why we need regulation. The banks preyed upon uneducated consumers. They presented these crappy mortgages in shiny packaging and told people they could have the American dream. If it were one mortgage broker doing it, we'd have 7 on your side and Shame on You there, but since it's an entiure industry it's the consumers' fault. I think there is plenty of blame to go around. The whole industry knew this was a rpoblem. My FH worked in mortgage backed securities for a major wall st firm and he always said "I don't know how they think they can continue to make money like this"..and what did you know... However, in the end, it was Wall St. that profited, and not Jane and John Doe who were just trying to have their piece of the American Dream. Lenders should not have been allowed to give out those mortgages. It was a whole multi-level scam. The payments started out low, so when the mortgages were sold, the boorowers were pauying on time and the mortgages looked dandy. once those rates changed it was another story and the securities were crap that they just kept polishing. It's a scam on so many levels with so many people and firms complicit in it. I think Jane and John Doe are the LEAST at fault in this entire thing

Nothing, health insurance is a risk management tool. Some people choice to use health insurance as a way to manage projected health care costs and to cover major medical expenses that are unexpected. Others choose to self insure and still others are forced to self insure because of financial constraints.

Health insurance and health care are two different things.

While I agree there is a lot of blame to be passed around, ignorance on Jane and John part is no excuse.

MY personal sense of responsibility and self preservation will force me to get health insurance. I'd be sweating bullets if I didnt have coverage.

But self preservation will mean something completely different to someone barely making ends-meat. Toss them a few extra $$ in their paycheck, and I'm not certain buying health insurance coverage would be at the top of the list of ways to spend that money.

Re: HOw do you feel about McCain's Health Plan

Health insurance DOES equal health care for me (and I believe for most americans) the same way scholarship = college.

I can't afford healthcare without insurance.

nope, not at all..then you will have to deplete your assets, declare bankrupcty and go on medicaid.

You may even have to sell assets.

If that happens..and it very well could, medicaid is screwed.

Not happy about it at all - I understand what he is trying to do, but the way he is going about it is a little warped.

I think the part that people are missing-because McCains camp isn't explaining it is-
if your company pays $600 of your $1000 monthly premium, the $600 is YOUR money...that is part of your taxable income for you to do whatever you want with. If you choose to put it toward your health insurance you can, if you choose to put it in a Flex or HSA account you can, if you choose to go to Vegas with it you can. Employers are not going to be allowed to keep the the money they contribute to health plans on behalf of their employees.
You will decide what to do with your earned money, not your employer & not the government.

I wish what my company whould have been paying for my insurance had I kept my insurance here was my money. As soon as I dropped my insurance 5 years ago I never saw that money. That would have been nice.
