It was a JOKE.....why must people read into things so much and turn them so many ways. Not just her comment but with many things.....I swear people just look for things to complain about in life. She is human, never claimed to be perfect, trying to break into a job that clearly maybe a handful of people want her in.....people need to give the lady a chance. Geez, the last guy in there, who was in education, obviously didn't fix the system, so give her a chance. Trust me, the kids will not suffer!!!

ETA- I am NOT talking about anyone on here, just people in general!!!

Klein wasn't an educator either.

And I'm not sure how many NYC parents are commenting here, but many parents complain that the city is unresponsive to them. Parents want lower class sizes and are very vocal about that. Class size has steadily increased in the last eight years and looks like it will get worse if these layoffs actually happen. It isn't funny if your child is in a large class in a failing school and as someone who has a MEDIA background, she should know better.

The last guy in there was Joel Klein and he was NOT in education either, never took an ed class or worked in a school a day in his life prior to becoming the Chancellor.

Also, as someone who works for the DOE the kids do and are suffering as a result.

I totally agree with her and am glad her joke brought to light what the problem really is.

So you are saying the real problem with overcrowding in NYC public schools is a lack of birth control. And this huge issue can be solved with putting residents of NYC on birth control?

I'm sorry to say you are misinformed. The problem is not too many kids. And let's face it, if ALL those parents started using birth control now Chat Icon Chat Icon it will not change the fact that that part of the city will need 1,000 more seats by 2015, so we're talking about kids who've already been born.

Another aspect of the problem in NYC has to do with charters and the small-school movement, which Joel Klein was a huge proponent of. For example, my school which had a history of large classes and overcrowding, was broken up into three smaller schools. None of the higher-ups realized that three schools meant three administrative and school support teams, which led to classrooms becoming offices, which led to teachers turning closets into classrooms.

Charters are creating similar problems because they are being co-located in public schools, but because many people who start charters have friends in high places, they manage to get more space for fewer kids. Some public schools have lost their libraries because charters took them over. And some charters turn over up to 30% of their kids, returning them to the public schools, but they don't replace the kids, hence adding to crowding issues.

I don't agree at all with people having kids for welfare benefits at all- but nearly all the kids in my class have no more than 1-3 siblings, which I don't think is unreasonable. I don't think that problem is as big as advertised, though I don't have stats for that assumption.

When you have a child in Kdg. with 2 younger siblings AND mom is pregnant again....yes...to me, that is a birth control problem for those who cannot afford them/ health care or for those who have many children to take advantage of the system. Let's keep it real and not be so PC

It is not a matter of being PC, it is a matter of being properly informed.

I live and work in NYC and the overcrowding is not only in areas where people are having children they cannot support.

If you read Mrsprofessor's post you can see that is an issue that was exaberated by Bloomberg and Klein's restructuring of the DOE, among other things.

And just so you know, many HS's in the inner city currently have clinic w/i them that supply students w/ birth control. And ALL NYC HS's supply students w/condoms. So her "joke" is something that is in fact being addressed by the DOE.

Before everyone jumps on this poster, can I try to clarify what I think she was trying to say:

NY is overcrowded. Period. That's why there are mornings when you have to let a subway train go and wait for the next one-you can't fit into it. That's why there is never any parking to be found. That's why there are lines everywhere. That's why there is perpetual traffic on every highway in this damn city. That's why there is traffic on the streets of NYC, for G'd sake! There are TOO many of us here. THere is not enough space for 8 million people in this metropolis!

That's the problem with overcrowded schools. There is no ROOM! I have just been introduced to this whole public school system and how it works: my son went to K this past September. It's a MAD house. The new new school built in my neighborhood to make room for the enormous amount of kids here is already full. They are building more, and I am sure the same thing will happen. There are 23 kids in my son's class and I was told we are lucky.

This city is OVERCROWDED, in school and in every other place as well and no system can handle it! It's the reality. It's what it is. It sucks!

Re: How do you feel about the Cathie Black comment?

I think the issue with the joke is that it has been heard before but people who have said it has been serious (not on here). People who say this are usually refering to people who have many children who can not support them and need government assistance.

I can take a joke and probably would have laughed at it. But someone in her position who can offend others shouldn't be saying it for all ears to hear. Like I tell my students, you need to filter yourself depending on the situation you are in.

I understand that there are many parents who cannot afford this situation, but what if you can? Should you still have to practice BC b/c NYC schools are overcrowded? I work in a very affluent school district and there are many families with 4-7 children - close in age. Do they fall under the same requests?

No, the kids ARE suffering. Chat Icon

Regarding the OT, it was a VERY distasteful comment coming from someone in that position. I'm not saying she doesn't have a point. It's not just NYC that is becoming overpopulated, it's our whole world. BUT, it was still in extremely poor taste, albeit a joke.
