How do you prefer your DC's teacher to send home work?
I'm being moved up to 4th grade this year. Normally I have a HW notebook and send students home with work daily. Usually math and spelling. Some of the other teachers on my grade level are going to send home a packet of work on Monday and all HW will be due on Friday.
Which would you prefer?
1) Daily assignments sent home and due the next day (I always excuse students who have a situation where they can't complete it and have a note)
Or
2) All work sent home Monday and due Friday.
Thanks for your input!

As a teacher and a parent I prefer daily. My own kids are old enough now that if they get a packet they want to save it all till Thursday and we fight all week.

I'm going with option #3 :) All of the homework on Monday with a plan of what's due during the week each day.
I can plan for the week (ie, if she has girl scouts one day, she can get it ready teh day before) & I'm assuming the homework handed in each day has something to do with what she's working on in class.

I too would prefer daily. 1. Prevents all left for Thursday 2. I would think the assignment coincided with the daily lesson, therefore better reinforcement, concentration each night.

Re: How do you prefer your DC's teacher to send home work?
My DD is only 4 so no HW yt but in my last few years teaching, my parents have raved that (in 2nd grade Accelerated) I used a homework packet. I gave all review assignments on the various subjects so it was not tied to daily lesson. Plus with their many afterschool activities (sports, CCD classes, dance etc) the parents loved that they didnt have to rush to do homework on a busy night.
Now I'm moving to 3d grade and debating if I should change to daily hw with an agenda to copy assignments.

I agree with this. It's hard to get to homework every night when they get out late and have other responsibilities. My DD gets off the bus at 4:15-4:20. Home for a snack and down time and out by 5:30 not to return until 7:30 some nights. She is 5/6 and should not have to come home to more work. If I have a week's work at the beginning of the week, I can spread it out to be more manageable for her.

It's nice to know in the beginning of the week what is expected, but I would prefer that the assignments be due daily.

As a teacher and a FT working parent, I like and do this option for my three high school courses. I plan 2-3 weeks at a time and post a jpeg of the assignment sheet and all pdf's on each course's Edmodo page. I hand out copies of the dittos/jpegs daily. If a student is absent or wants to get ahead they can download and print the jpeg.
I've never liked giving daily assignments and then hearing they didn;t get to them because of other responsibilities. Now there is no excuse and they can practice planning their time.

Re: How do you prefer your DC's teacher to send home work?
We send home a homework sheet so they know what we will be doing, but we don't send home all the sheets at once. Keep in mind some parents may go ahead and have their kids to all of their homework at once.

Daily. I'm not a fan of packets for the week.

I would like #2 - that way we could get all the hw out of the way on a day that we have nothing going on and don't have to stress about it on the days of soccer, piano, etc...

Re: How do you prefer your DC's teacher to send home work?
Thanks everyone!!! I think I'm leaning toward the 3rd option suggested. Hand out an overview on Monday, but still have it due daily. Maybe this will appeal more to all because its a little of both.

Re: How do you prefer your DC's teacher to send home work?
My thoughts are daily for a few reasons. A 4th grader doesn't need a packet and they are old enough to be responsible to do hw daily. I send my kids to after school where the program is designed for hw help. So I prefer they have something to do daily. Also knowing parents in my community they would push their child to finish the entire packet the 1st day.

Re: How do you prefer your DC's teacher to send home work?
I loved Kindergarten and DS got his weekly homework. The nights we knew we were busy, we did 2 nights of it the night before. I know it is more for a 4th grader but I would love to know what I would have to do a week at a time.

I agree with this. My DS is younger, entering K and I hope he gets homework every day. It's better for the students, and school is first priority for him,not activities.

We get a hw sheet that maps out what will be done for the week but the actual assignments get sent home daily. I like it this way

Re: How do you prefer your DC's teacher to send home work?
I would say with my child the first month or two of daily was helpful. After that I saw that some things were daily while others were weekly or due on a specific day of the week. I think that both are important. Making sure they are doing daily tasks but also giving them some flexibility was a good learning experience. The first time she waited until the last possible second. After that she learned and there was no mad dash to complete it. I thought it was an awesome teachable point for her - and definitely preparing her for what she is in for in the next few years.

I like this one too. Last year DD received a sheet on Monday listing homework for the week and each day something was due. I liked it because we could go ahead if we had something going on on another day and would be home late.

Re: How do you prefer your DC's teacher to send home work?
I LOVE the packet! Makes life SO much easier!! We still do one assignment a night for 90% of the time. It is nice to know ahead of time so if I know we are going to be out late or at a game or practice, we can get it done before or if it is time consuming, I know what is in store for the nights of the week. ETA: It wasn't all due at once on Friday. You just knew on Monday what the HW assignments were, but each night the HW was due the following morning.

I am not sure why a packet given Monday with either daily assignments or due the end of the week means that school is not a priority since it is not sent home nightly. As kids get older they are given assignments and it just makes them plan their week and be better organized. This way if one night has a longer assignment the child can either plan ahead and break it up and do some the night before or put more time aside to do the work that day. Most people do things outside of school be it afterschool program for kids with working parents or music, sports etc, or whatever. If you have the weekly assignments your child knows they have to do xyz assignments and plan their time accordingly to do a good job. When you only get the assignment each day and say a doctors appt it might mean a rushed job whereas if you knew the assignment the child could do part of it the night before rather than a rushed job that night. I like that it teaches time management.

How do you prefer your DC's teacher to send home work?
As a teacher I often gave HW for the week on Monday and made it due Friday. My students were older- 6,7,8th grade, had little support at home (so I didn't worry that my approach would cause stress for parents) and this was how I incorporated time management skills.
I don't know enough about 4th graders to know if that would also help them and while you should consider parents' needs I think transitioning them to more independence is a good idea. If my DD was in 4th and got a packet I would be fine with it. But I'd also have no issue with daily HW.
