How do you protect DC from the fireplace?

How do you protect DC from the fireplace?
We'd like to have a fire going, but we know Ryan would walk right up to the fireplace. Does anyone have a gate they use to block it that they would recommend?

I used to have a fireguard in front of our fire, but it was really bulky. We have a gas fireplace...but nowadays we don't use it as we have a wooden toy box type thing in front.
