how does Transit check work, my HR gave me wrong info
I am so pissed, my HR department made it sound like I get reimbursed X amount for money I spend for LIRR/parking etc.
I find out its money taken out of my paycheck each month. I told HR I usually take the LIRR but at times drive and park, so now she has them taking $330 out of my paycheck. Only $130 allowed for LIRR and $200 for parking. If I park its only about 2 a month if that much. I am starting to feel un happy at this new job bc the ONE and only ONE HR person never explains things correctly.
What happens if X amount is taken out, not used. I know it can roll over to the next month, but WHAT if I never use it, how do I get that money back.
I hope this makes sense, I cant type out my thoughts UGH

Sounds incorrect to me, because that money becomes use it or lose it. You don't get it back. $200 is A LOT to be taken out, it sounds like she is maxing you out (which would make sense if you parked ALL the time). I would address this with her, you want the minimum (I would assume, or close to it) taken out for the parking and maximum taken out for LIRR.

it sounds like that person is seriously understaffed. How many people does the company employ to have just 1 HR person?

then when I submit for payment I will say I only have receipts for x amount but claim the full $200. I don't know what else to do, bc Transit told me its to late for July bc the Money was taken but they said I should suspend it for Aug etc until its worked out.
I feel so angry. Why cant people do their jobs correctly and give the correct info....@!!@#&e
vent over for the moment.

The money is taken out of your pay, before taxes, & is put on a card & given back to you to be used for transit expenses only.
The two programs (transit & parking) are separate.
You don't have to take the maximum out. I do for the transit, b/c my commute costs over $300.
If you don't park often, you may want to skip that part & just do the transit.
ETA- It sounds like you need to suspend the parking part & just use up the $200. They didn't give it to out on a card?
I don't know as much about the parking b/c no one here uses that.

If it really is just 1 person doing all HR for the entire company, and they are large enough to offer transit & medical, my guess is she/he is SEVERELY understaffed. It's impossible (as you have unfortunately seen first hand) to do all of that correctly as one person.

Plus I have been paying out for travel for 2 months, which she said I can get that portion back but not true..

for 1 person in HR, that's insane to handle everything alone. No wonder she/he is giving you wrong information. I know they can mail a check, but if my recollection is correct, it's not a check made out to you, it's made out to mta. I would max out on the LIRR and just get enough to cover your parking... so I would put that on hold for a few months.

Yes- that is the max. I add my own $ to the card (online) & then my my monthly pass, or just use the cards for the subway.
The writing the check part doesn't sound right. If they have TransitChek premium (my company doesn't) maybe she is talking about
"TransitChek CashBack®

First of all….she should not be doing anything…YOU have to sign a form that tells your Payroll how much to deduct from your account. YOU need to tell them how much you want taken out. If you didn't do that, then she's overstepping her boundaries and definitely not doing the right thing.
$130/month is the max you can take for the LIRR. Transit check recently changed all their rules - I mean like as of last week. You can only use a card now (like a CC) and you won't get a check mailed to you anymore I believe. It has to be done through the card. I could be wrong bc I stopped using Transit Check (I work from home mostly) a couple years ago, but I still get the emails through work about the program and what's involved.

She can reverse it and pay it back to you in your next paycheck. When my HR dept messed up that's what they did for me

Just an FYI - you can get the entire amount for your train ticket deducted out of your paycheck each month - $130 will be pre-tax and the rest will be post-tax.
The one benefit of doing it that way is that sometimes they retro-actively increase the pre-tax limit so you will get money back.
As for the parking - I would suspend it for now and use up they have taken out.
We switched from Transit Check to Wageworks and I do everything through their website - I'm sure Transit Check has the same.

thank you all. I spoke to HR she said she can cancel it bc they did not take it out of my paycheck yet.
I plan on only taking the train at least until the winter to save wear on my car. After I get back some money I will only take $130 for the train.
Still pissed bc I feel as if all her info on everything is wrong

Update: A few suggested I enter the amount I wanted deducted on the site. My company has it locked so employees cannot make the changes they want on the Transit chek website. HR had no idea it was locked until I told them, so they are trying to change it ??
HR did something this past week and told me about after, when I thought about it that night I am not too happy :( this is too much work for a small credit

That's the way I feel about the FSA. The company that we have the FSA thru is horrible. Nothing is automatically forwarded from our health insurance so for every withdrawal I need to scan, fill out claim form and submit paperwork. It is NOT worth all of the effort to save probably 100 dollars on taxes.

Mine is annoying too. even if I use the card they give to to pay for something, you have to go on lien & submit receipts anyway. DH's is not like that.
Transit check is annoying to me too, b/c I can't have my whole train ticket amount taken out--I can't add post tax money to it when it is ordered, I have to go online & do it myself, and I often forget & end up with unused cards in my bag & use my credit card to buy my tickets, b/c it is the end of the month when I remember.
