I wouldnt want to go in earlier than 8 or get out later than 3. For those who go in so late, you must not get home til like 4-430 and still have to do HW, dinner, activities, Baths. Seems ridiculous!

When my son was in aftercare he was there until 6, lol. You make it work

To answer the question, when my son was in elementary they opened the doors at 7:50 a.m. and school started at 8:25 a.m. (we are in the city so there is free breakfast)

Now he is in JHS, doors open at 7:30 a.m.. They have free breakfast and read for 10 minutes from 7:50-8:00 a.m.

But in after school he had time to do his HW and unwind before going home to eat, bathe and go to sleep. Regardless if he is at home or in after school kids need time for that stuff too.

Rarely did homework happen OR any unwinding. They run around like animals

Yea, my son is a jerk and rarely does his hwk in aftercare. I still have to bribe him or yell at him to do it in aftercare before his dad gets him. He's 10. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: How early is too early to start the day- elementary school ?

I would love an early start, but that would come with an earlier release, which I feel like most parents in my area wouldn't like. We are 9:20-3:20 (though the doors open at 9:05) and I can't imagine our parents being happy with the kids home at 2:30 due to childcare needs.

I think either way the school day sucks for working parents. Whether they have to worry about childcare in the morning for a late start or childcare in the afternoon for an early start/early release.
And even if they got home at 4 pm, it would still be too early for working parents.

I would prefer the elementary schools to start earlier and the middle and high schools to start later. In most districts the buses are shared between schools so they start the high school first, then middle then elementary. Young kids can go to bed earlier and wake up earlier. The older kids stay up later doing homework and then need to get up at the crack of dawn.

My kids start at 9:00, bus comes at 8:35. I wouldn't mind if it started an hour earlier.

My DS' elementary school will start at 8:45. That is too late for us. My DS goes to daycare at 7am on the dot every morning. Next year we are going to try to adjust my DH's schedule so we will not need before care, but we need to see when the bus will come.

Yes!

That's why I would prefer an earlier start time as then we would ONLY have to worry about after care. 8:45 start is very late if you are working.

How early is too early to start the day- elementary school ?

My kids have to be in school by 8:50. The bus comes at 8:15 and sometimes I will let them play longer and drive them. I can drop them off anytime after 8:40 but before 8:50. They get off the bus at 3:10. My kids are early risers so it doesn't bother me, we are still late since I like to lay in bed till 7. Next year it will be hard since I have to go back to work and I need to find something between those hours.
My best friends son will start Kindergarten next year and she said the bus will be coming at 7:15 which I think is too early.

I think a perfect time would be 8:30. Now my DS starts at 9:15 and its just inconvenient for my work schedule.

Re: How early is too early to start the day- elementary school ?

The earlier the better. Most younger kids are up anyway. I KNOW that school isn't daycare, but it's very hard for working parents when school starts late. At least there are options for after school care until 6pm usually.

My son's school starts at 9:30! That is just too late. We have already been up 3 hours by then (because my old daughter's school starts early) so by 9:30 it's practically lunchtime for us. Plus we need morning child care AND afternoon child care.

My dd’s school begins at 8. Bus comes 7:10ish I believe but that’s way too early so I drive her. Any start time within the 7 range is just too early imo.

Our elementary school starts at 8:10, doors open for breakfast program at 7:45. It would be much easier for me if doors opened at 7:30 for my work schedule.
