yep... i find if you go closer to the 3 hours, you wait more than you need to, JMO. also, depends on the airline and the final destination.

They say 3 hours. I usually do get there 3 hours early and wait around a lot..but I don't mind. I just walk around the stores, sit at a bar, etc.

You would probably be fine getting there 2 hours earlier though.

2 hours if you are not checking luggage, 3 hours if you are.

We get there at least 3 hours ahead of time to be on the safe side.

We usually give ourselves 3 hours. I'd rather get there early than be stuck on line checking in and possibly missing the flight.

We travel internationally all the time. 2 hours is usually more then enough. Where are you going? If it is somewhere very touristy, like Cancun, then I would give it 3 hours.

Yeah, I agree. I remember waiting in line for USAir to the Bahamas and the line took 2 hours.Chat Icon Chat Icon Once we got our tickets, it was mere minutes when we reached our gate, but the flight was delayed.

My husband is travelling to China on business- and leaves on Thursday. He was making me nervous, so I told him to be there 3 hours early.

I understand. It's better to be too early then too late. I just hate waiting around. Where in China is your husband going?

if it's DELTA out of JFK, get there the day before Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

otherwise, definitely 2 hours. I'd rather risk boredom and a bad iced coffee at the airport than spend $$ changing my plane ticket b/c the long assss check in line didn't get me to the counter 60 minutes before my flight, so I was bumped and had to pay for a new one (yes, that was YOU, evil, vile delta)

Just as an FYI:

I used to work for a foreign airline and there is a 45 minute cutoff time where an airline can dump your reservation.

So, if the airline is overbooked (they can overbook by 20% and this does happen in the busy times - for us, busy was summer to Europe), and you come less than 45 min before your flight, they can give up your seat, put you on stand-by and owe you nothing.

Not to stress anyone out - just something to keep in the back of you head.

Delta did this to me on a trip to Germany.

and it was 60 minutes, not 45.

the kicker was, we were STANDING ON LINE at the airport, b/c their system was so effed up, every single flight leaving was on the same line.

but they were in bankruptcy.

so they kicked us off the flight, made us rebook another flight, and charged us for it. Chat Icon

Chat Icon WT F?? sounds like something suitable for "shame on you"

I would have written a letter to every exec at Delta - even if it didn't get me a dime back, just so that I can vent! Chat Icon

We usually go 2.5 hours early when traveling to a tourist destination. Our flights range from 6am - 8am. THe airports are busy but I haven't had a problem with Continential ... yet
