How fast in the left lane?
Out of curiosity... I am a middle lane driver for the most part. I don't like driving more than 8-10mph over the limit.
My MIL and I got into a conversation today about how certain people shouldn't drive in the left lane.
So my question is - what would you say is the minimum speed someone should drive in the left lane (assuming it isn't rush hour and the speed limit is 55)? And which lane do you drive in?
I feel like 65-70 is acceptable in the left lane, but people tailgate me if I go that slow. Hence why I end up in the middle.

How fast in the left lane?
Isn't the left lane technically only for passing?

How fast in the left lane?
My rule of thumb is that to be in the left lane I need to be going faster than people in the other lanes. If you aren't passing people you shouldn't be in the left.

Re: How fast in the left lane?
I feel that the lane to your left is for passing, so if you are not passing anybody on a lane to your right, you should move to the right. If there are a lot of on-ramps, it gets to be a pain, so I stay in the middle, and I try to only use the far left when I'm passing, or there's traffic and we're all going below the speed limit.
Before anyone accuses me of anything, I never said I don't speed, I just only use the far left to pass people, and I stay to the right if people are passing me...

How fast in the left lane?
I don't use the left lane often, like I said, but lots of people appear to just stay in it. So would you just say if they are going faster than everyone around them it is appropriate?

This. EXCEPTION on the Northern, where there are only 2 lanes.

I don't see any exception personally... there are two lanes, and the left is still the passing lane.

Re: How fast in the left lane?
I like the left lane especially on the Northern state where is is only 2 lanes and i probably drive 65-70 but if someone comes up behind me fast I move out of the lane to let them pass. I always feel it is better to have someone going faster in front of me so the cop will get them, lol.

Yes basically
ETA: my posts assume, of course, that there is free flowing traffic. If it's stop and go in all lanes, then it doesn't matter which lane you are in

Re: How fast in the left lane?
I use the left lane for passing only - unless there is traffic, then any lane is fair game. This also holds true for roads that are only two lanes.

I do, especially in sections where there are a lot of exit/entrance ramps, especially for newer drivers where that might make them nervous. When you are driving on the thruway where there are long (miles long) stretches without an entrance/exit, that I agree with you.

Re: How fast in the left lane?
The left lane is for passing. If you are not going faster than the right or middle lanes then you should not be in the left lane as you are impeding traffic. People that go to the left lane and sit there cause traffic delays and accidents by reckless drivers leapfrogging to pass them. If you are not comfortable driving as fast as the cars in the left lane to pass other drivers IMO you should not be driving in the left lane. edit - I am not saying the leapfrogging drivers are good or correct, but I do think people who sit and impede traffic in the left lane don't realize that they are the ones who caused the problem to begin with. In NJ the roads have a 65 mph speed limit in many places. People go at least 75-80 in the left lane and some people go 90. To me 90 is way way to fast. But there are people who will go 70 in the left lane and that causes traffic delays. People don't even drive 65. That is considered "slow" even though it is the speed limit.

I know the left lane is for passing, but this is more what I was getting at. People go at least 75-80 in the fast lane (in a 65, but still). So 10-15 over the speed limit.
I can be passing a few cars in the middle lane who are going 60, so I may be going 65/67 and have someone on my bumper trying to go 75. He isn't passing anyone - he's just driving in the left lane. So am I the a-hole? (Assuming I didn't cut him off)
I feel like sometimes on the Meadowbrook during the day, I don't even want to go near the left lane (even to pass) unless I'm comfortable going 75, which I'm not. People just drive SO fast. I sound like an 80 yr old woman, I know. LOL

I got a ticket last week because I was thinking the speed limit was 65. I now try not to go over that.
Sorry I'm slightly off topic, and yes, I know on average people drive at least 70 on highways.

In this case you should move over and let him pass. I do this all the time. Main reason I want to let him pass so if there are cops ahead they will catch him and not me.

Re: How fast in the left lane?
Here in NC, if you are going less than 80 in the left, they will tailgate the hell out of you. And they don't just use it for passing, they stay there.
Just to add -- in the Raleigh area, speed limit on one expressway is 70 and another is 65.
