I got a ticket last week because I was thinking the speed limit was 65. I now try not to go over that.

Sorry I'm slightly off topic, and yes, I know on average people drive at least 70 on highways.

:Chat Icon

Do you really think 70 is average? DH probably drives that, but I think he drives really fast haha

Probably on LI at least during rush hour traffic when it's stop and go.

If not at least 80.

I was going in the high 70s when I got pulled over and he was nice and bumped it down.

Speed limit on the highways here is 55.

This isn't really an opinion question. The law is that the left lane is for passing.

In general, the same basic rule applies for middle vs right lane. Obvious exceptions for entering and exiting traffic.

The law doesn't actually say that....

Here's the law:

Any vehicle which is going slower than the normal speed of traffic must be driven in the right-hand lane or at the right hand side of the road, unless it is passing traffic moving in the same direction or preparing for a left turn.

In NJ yes but in NY no. You can stay in the left lane if you are exceeding the average speed on the highway. And this is for the average speed, not necessarily the legal speed.

State Laws

So all you people who like to drive 65-70 in the left lane and feel this is "fast enough", when everyone is still passing you on the right... you have to move over regardless of what the speed limit is.

If someone is coming behind you in the left lane move over. It is for passing only. My biggest peeve is sitting behind someone in the left lane. I dont care if you are going 50 or 80. If someone is on your tail MOVE OVER. LOL.

In NJ the roads have a 65 mph speed limit in many places. People go at least 75-80 in the left lane and some people go 90. To me 90 is way way to fast. But there are people who will go 70 in the left lane and that causes traffic delays. People don't even drive 65. That is considered "slow" even though it is the speed limit.

I know the left lane is for passing, but this is more what I was getting at. People go at least 75-80 in the fast lane (in a 65, but still). So 10-15 over the speed limit.

I can be passing a few cars in the middle lane who are going 60, so I may be going 65/67 and have someone on my bumper trying to go 75. He isn't passing anyone - he's just driving in the left lane. So am I the a-hole? (Assuming I didn't cut him off)

I feel like sometimes on the Meadowbrook during the day, I don't even want to go near the left lane (even to pass) unless I'm comfortable going 75, which I'm not. People just drive SO fast. I sound like an 80 yr old woman, I know. LOL

yes you should move over cause the way I look at it is if the driver wants to do 75 and they are in the left lane then so be it ... its their choice and their ticket so you should move over ....
with that said I can be a total hypocrite I sometimes am an asshole and ***** and don't move over when I do feel like I am going fast enough most of the times I do that though its usually when there is decent traffic and getting over is more of a pain and I have to then move back into the left lane. I admit I am def. wrong for doing this but like I say I have my days when I don't care Chat Icon

So if I'm driving even lets say... 70! And passing cars on my right, you speedy chicks think I should move out of your way, even when I'm going 15mph over the limit? Because you want to drive 80?

I don't think the left lane laws are meant to be interpreted as you can go "as fast as you want" LOLChat Icon

That being said, I move. Because I (obviously) don't like being tailgated. I just think its funny.

Re: How fast in the left lane?

This is only relevant to the Southern State: regardless of traffic laws and from my driving experience only - 70.

This is what I do. If someone is driving faster than me, I always move over. One main reason is because I feel like they are obviously an aggressive driver and I do not want to put myself in an unsafe situation.

Plus, I have been behind that person going 55 in the left lane and perhaps they are passing people, but they are impeding traffic. It drives me insane (and I do not even drive that fast).

I am a right lane driver and only use the left to pass. For the most part I don't stay there. I got a speeding ticket when I was 21 so that's crossed off my bucket list and I don't need to repeat the experience.Chat Icon

The left lane on the LIE? No one uses that JUST for passing. If you aren't driving at least 85 in that lane, expect to get tailgated and almost hit.

Re: How fast in the left lane?

I feel that if someone is riding your tail regardless of how fast you are going, the right thing to do is move over. If they get a ticket for speeding that is on them. By sitting in the left lane and causing a traffic jam (regardless of how fast or slow you are going) you as the driver sitting in the left lane when others want to pass you are potentially going to cause an accident so the right thing to do is move over. I am not saying speeding or tailgating is the right thing to do. I hate tailgaters and try to move over asap if I am being tailgated.

How fast in the left lane?

The left lane is for people who want to go fast and pass the other cars. If you're concerned that they're going too fast, or going to kill themselves- then get the F out of their way and let them.
My biggest pet peeve is when people feel that they're entitled to do the speed limit in the left lane, thus disrupting the flow of traffic, which IS a punishable offense. Don't use your car to prove a point!

Re: How fast in the left lane?

When I do drive, I go 65 in the left lane if I am passing. I had a few speeding tickets in my past and I learned my lesson. Even now on the Autobahn, I can't speed-- I'm too scared!

If I go over 65, I make sure to steal my neighbour's garbage pail and attach it to the back of my car. I then fling dog poop with a plunger (bleaching it after, of course) and hope it goes into the neighbour's pail (don't worry I always tip the garbageman at Xmas!). I always make sure to do this with someone breastfeeding in the car. I then check myself for insulin and check my rosary beads hanging from my rear view mirror. I haven't cleaned off the snow from my windows, but I will make sure to superglue Jesus, which has been broken from my speeding (but I can talk that down in Nassau, right?).

After I'm done I park in front of someone else's house.

Please stop.

This isn't really an opinion question. The law is that the left lane is for passing.

In general, the same basic rule applies for middle vs right lane. Obvious exceptions for entering and exiting traffic.

Thank you! It drives me insane that no one know this law and think they can just go any speed in any lane they choose. I really wish the police would actually enforce it.

I admit I am ignorant to the laws of the "fast lane". I was always curious as to the speed limit. I drive fast and will go around someone or if some one is up my @ss in any lane, I just move over.

I also have the mentality of letting the speedier demon get pulled over. Lol
