How important Is having a drop side on a crib?

I am very lost about these cribs and what is practical, what is not? Is a dropside critical and why or why not? What about adjustible mattress settings?

Anyone have any tips?

I'm not sure how important it is. I haven't gotten to the stage yet to think about cribs and such. But I know for me, I think it's a must or at least a good option because I'm pretty short, and I think having the drop side on the crib will be better for me.

I am pretty short (just over 5 feet) and I don't have a drop side crib. I haven't had a problem putting him down yet.

I'm not getting a drop side. I originally planned on it, but the ones without the drop side don't seem that much taller, if they're any taller, than the drop sides when they're down.

If you are short I highly recommend a drop side crib. I've woken babies up trying to maneuver them into the crib. Its very hard for me to reach (I'm 5')

I think you really just need to go the store and see what you like. I am pretty tall so I didn't need a drop side crib. Plus, the crib that we bought is the one that transitions into a full size bed so it didn't even have a drop down feature. When Chat Icon gets older, we will just drop the mattress down a bit. My mom is shorter than I am and for DS (she watches him every day for us) we bought her a crib the the drop down side and she loves it. It's really a matter of preference.

I dont have the drop side crib. It is a little difficult putting AJ into it now being preggo but it isnt that bad.
I picked the non drop sides b/c I liked the styles better.

Unfortunately, I am ordering from a catalog and most of the cribs aren't in the store (Pottery Barn). I did call though and luckily, they are telling me that the cribs i am interested in do have drop sides and adjustible mattress settings.

And I am not tall, so I would like to be comfortable when dealing with the crib.

Thanks so much ladies, I undertand much more now. I learn so much from you ladies, thanks a bunch!!Chat Icon

I don't think it's a must but we went with the drop side because I'm short and it will make it easier for me, I think it's definitely a plus

Re: How important Is having a drop side on a crib?

I have a drop side crib. I'm 5'8". I never drop the side to put DD in or take her out. Her mattress is in the lowest position now. I do drop it when I change her bedding but I have changed it without lowering it. It's not really a problem.

My Mom is 5'3" and with the mattress in the lowest position she does have to drop the side to get DD, unless she is standing.

When raising it, the sound it makes clicking into place would wake DD up so if I couldn't reach to lay her down I'd put a step stool or something for me to safely stand on to avoid the noise.

I used it alot because I have a bad back and it was hard for me to bend down and get him out.

I didn't want a drop side crib. I'm 5'5 and I do just fine with a regular crib.

Re: How important Is having a drop side on a crib?

We didn't buy the drop side one we went with the stable side. I found myself retarded trying to release it that I just didn't see the point and the ones that don't go down look more stable. It happens to be the ones that don't drop vs. the ones that do are the same height if you release the one side just the mattress is a little lower but same distance. In my opinion.

Re: How important Is having a drop side on a crib?

When I was trying the drop side cribs in BRU they were so hard to use I couldn't imagine trying to do that holding a baby or not waking the baby up.

I am only 5'4" and have no problem with not having a drop down side.

same here, i'm 5 foot 3, insisted on getting a drop side crib, yet never used the drop down size until a month or so ago and thats because of my pregnant belly.

Im tall and so is DH. We decided against a drop down crib. I am also not a fan of cribs with too many moving parts.

Re: How important Is having a drop side on a crib?

I preferred not having a drop down with DS. Mine is a Generation Next, which is not only convertable, but it has only 3" of the rail drop. It is very sturdy and DS was not able to get the rail to drop.

Re: How important Is having a drop side on a crib?

I'm tall so it's not an issue for me at all and my crib does not have a drop down side. I agree with Goldi about limiting the number of moving parts on a crib.

Re: How important Is having a drop side on a crib?

I may look at cribs this weekend. I'm 5'4" so I thought a drop down crib would be important, but it seems that people around my height get by without them. I guess I'll see how easy they are to use.

Re: How important Is having a drop side on a crib?

drop downs start higher than regular cribs.

when you lower them, they are at the same exact hight of a regular crib.

my mom didn't believe the people at BBB until the very patient worker showed her. she was insisting on me getting a drop down crib until we realized that it's no lower than any other.

Re: How important Is having a drop side on a crib?

i dont have with my dd and getting same crib with baby #2. I never had a problem with it not dropping until now. B/c the mattress is at the lowest level and being prego makes it hard for me to put my dd down for bed.

When i went to behrs when i was prego with dd i heard the guy telling another couple they werent making those kind of cribs anymore b/c of saftey reasons. Chat Icon
