Re: How is everyone voting this year?

On normal elections days, I never wait more than 10 minutes. I basically walk in and vote. I tried 3 days in a row to do early voting and the lines are absolutely insane. Hours of waiting. I still haven't voted because of it. I don't really understand.
This was the case for me up until the last election, maybe I'm thinking 2018. They switched to tablets which took longer for the workers to navigate and they wouldn't let you skip the initial line if you knew your district like in the past. It was definitely a longer process. Early voting wouldn't solve that but I am prepared for nov.3rd to be a lengthy one too just bc of all that plus high turnout and potentially less poll workers. I'm going to try this afternoon but if it's a crazy long line I'll wait until the 3rd.

So watching the news this morning and they are showing lines to early vote on the Upper East Side. No distancing at all. 100s of people one on top of the next. No separation at all. Masks on yes but wow. Talk about a crowded gathering! Yikes
I’d risk Covid to cast my vote against Trump
OMG yes!!
No worries. We are a blue state anyway.
I have never waited on line. I usually go at like 8 p.m. and there is me and the workers and that's about it.

And the point was to spread it out because of covid lol
I have been saying this since I saw a line at least a mile long on Saturday at the Dix Hills FD. From what people are saying on local groups the line is a consistent 2.5-3 hours wait time.
People were wearing masks but they were not distancing.
I thought the reason for early voting was to help alleviate lines and gatherings on Election Day.

It was. Until everyone decided they had to vote early as if their vote counts more if done before Election Day. By Nov 3rd you'll be the only one left who hasn't voted by waitimg on line for 6 hours in a crowd and should breeze in and out at your regular polling place.

How is everyone voting this year?
I got an absentee ballot and sent it in. I figured lines would be crazy. I have to work and have 2 toddlers I don’t have time to wait like that!

People have moved out of the city, they are tired of the blue state of Cuomo and Deblasio and there is a lot of silent majority on the island. Hope it turns red to stick it to Cuomo.

It all makes no sense to me and I actually had someone tell me that basically your vote won't count if you wait. I have no clue where people are getting all of this misinformation. No one ever did this before (at least here in NY as they all just went on election day) so what makes them think their vote is more important and will be counted more than someone who goes on the intended day to vote?

And I hope all the former city folks that moved out east help vote out Lee Zeldin. I can't wait until I never have to hear his name again.

So I always read about and see on TV these huge lines to vote and hours wait times . I must live in an area with low voter turn out because I have never had to wait on a line to vote in any presidential election.
Lines are hours long right now all over LI and NYC. I have a friend that got in line at 915 for a 10 open and she is still waiting. This is happening all over now.
I was just stating how it's been in years past. I really can't wait 8 hours on a line so hopefully my polling place is still the same as it was in years past. Not sure what has changed. My polling place is at my elementary school and only includes voters in a small area...my sister lives down the block and is zoned to vote at another spot. So with so few people zoned to vote at that school and everyone rushing to vote early or doing mail in this year, i can't see it being any busier than last election. Unless 1000s more have moved into my small area this year and are zoned to vote there.
ETA...friends were on line 3 hours today at the town hall. I wonder if early voting is equaling the long lines because they have limited spots to vote early as opposed to when you go vote on the 3rd you go to your own designated polling place which is usually for a small part of your town. Today everyone in our town is lining up at town hall. On the 3rd it will be spread out to all the normal polling places.
I’ve changed my mind based on the long waits today and will be voting on Election Day too. Now that my kids will be at school I will be up and moving early and my polling place (and the two before it) have never had lines as they service a smaller area, as opposed to town hall which services about 15 separate polling places. My normal polling place is walkable and services a small area of town, many of which did absentee ballots, waited forever to vote today or don’t vote first thing in the morning.
This was my thoughts exactly. Why the rush to vote early if the lines are 3 and 4 hours long due to more people congregating at one polling place when on election day there will be a lot more polling places serving smaller areas.
Supposedly it was because ppl were afraid that Cuomo would shut us down again due to second wave, originally that was the thought, I don’t know if things have changed.

I actually don't even want to vote, I don't care for either options.
I’m not a republican and hell no I’m not a democrat so I don’t care for either of them. However I do believe there needs to be a balance in a state government because a trifecta democratic or republican state is never a good thing! Hopefully the balance will be establish again after seeing how Cuomo has behaved during this pandemic!

Well that theory is out the window now since we are a week away and no second wave shut downs so.... And even if he did, there would have to be a way to vote . You can't just tell people they can't vote

That just means your vote is counted after the mail in ones. It’s doesn’t mean your vote doesn’t count. Also if you bring in your mail in ballot the day of it’s the same as bringing it in early. It doesn’t become provisional because you casted your vote on Election Day. Provisional is for people like me who don’t have their actual ballot that was mailed to them.

People want to vote early because they can - I don't know anyone who thinks their vote matters more if they vote early. That sounds like the propaganda spreading from the fearmongerers.
Trump has sown enormous doubt into this years critical election, and people want to make sure their vote is counted. It doesn't matter one bit to me if people want to wait for 10 hours today or on 11/3. People very proudly want to cast their vote to get Trump out, so let them.

I think that’s really what it is. With all the talk about the post office and mail in votes, fraud, people are nervous. People want to make sure it gets in there and nervous now. Everyone is double and triple checking to make sure their vote was counted like never before. Tracking their ballots etc.
I just hate lines, so nothing will scare me that bad to wait on a line for hours. lol.

He’s going down in history as one of the worst leaders of our time, but I’ll give him credit.
His pathological lying, anti-social personality disorder, and narcissism actually increased voter turn out and engaged more voters.

The point of early voting is that not everyone can easily go on the specific Tuesday of Election Day. Early voting was not implemented bc of covid, it had already been put in place so that more people will have the opportunity to vote.
I have to be honest, early voting makes no sense to me - especially here in NYS. Under NYS Election law, your employer MUST give you time off to vote if you do not have 4 consecutive hours (either before your start time or after your quitting time) in which to make it to the polls to vote. In NYS polls are open 6 am to 9 pm.
My sister is an RN who routinely works 12 hours shifts. She requests an absentee ballot every election - if she needs it she votes by mail. If not, she goes to polls in person on election day.
I'm not opposed to early voting, I just don't understand the need for it here.

Really though? People with transpo issues, the houseless, and the disabled might not need extra time versus one specific day?

I don't think so - not here. Maybe in other parts of the country. I get at least 5-10 phone calls on election day from various candidates' campaigns asking if any voter in my house needs a ride to the polls. You can actually request an absentee ballot in person at your local election board or designate someone to pick it up for you.
In addition, if you are disabled, you can apply to have an absentee ballot mailed to you each election automatically.
Again - NYS makes it super easy to vote. I don't see the need for early voting (and the associated costs) especially with our economy the way it is now.

Your thinking is very targeted to your exact situation and the fact that you live in a densely populated area with adequate transportation.
I live upstate in a well populated area, but I taught in a VERY RURAL area. They had to drive 30 minutes to get to the grocery store. They had one local restaurant. They got a McDonalds 5 years ago and it was the biggest deal ever. Before that, there was nothing there. There is no public transportation. Things like taxis and ubers are practically nonexistent. Some of my students lived 30-40 minutes away from the school. Not of all NY is like downstate.
