How long do you let your infant fuss
(not cry) before you get up & go into their room?
Our 4 m/o (knock wood) isn't a crier, he tends to just fuss &/or give a loud "Eh" when he wants our attention. He doesn't STTN yet (we're lucky when we get 4 or 5 hour stretches) & although I've tried not to, I've pretty much been picking him up almost immediately when he starts to fuss at night. Now that he's going to be down the hall though that's not going to be so easy & I know that he has to learn to self-soothe a little more. Sooo that's why I'm wondering what's a reasonable amount of time to let him fuss before I run down there to check on him/pick him up? Thanks!

Re: How long do you let your infant fuss
DS is 4 months and my ped. recommended letting him fuss for a few minutes before I get him now. But DS doesnt fuss often, he cries to be held as soon as he wakes up or if he wants to be picked up.

Re: How long do you let your infant fuss
Joey the past few nights has been fussing around 3am but not full out crying (which he normally does when hungry or wants to be held) the first night I picked him up and fed him immediately and then thought to myself...maybe he just wanted his paci or just needed to be rocked back to sleep...so the next night, again around 3am he fussed for a few...so I put the paci in, rocked his bassinet and he went back out....so maybe give DC a few minutes. If a full out cry begins I would pick him up.
I'm no expert though, it's only been 7 weeks for me haha

Re: How long do you let your infant fuss
I picked other...if your talking about in the middle of the night and dc is just fussing and not crying I would wait until dc cried or until the fussing gets really loud...there have been some nights where I've jumped up and ran in...I would never pick dd up but to give her a pacifier so she would go right back to sleep. But there have also been some nights where I got up a10x so now I try to wait... In the morning she wakes up, talks and plays in her crib for a good hour before she starts to fuss (love to just listen to her)

Re: How long do you let your infant fuss
If my ds is not crying, I do not get him.....fussing is different than crying IMHO
alot of times, he will fuss, fidget (I watch him on the video monitor), etc and then fall back asleep
if he is CRYING crying, I go in and get him immediately....he is 4 months old

Re: How long do you let your infant fuss
Thanks for your replies ladies!
I found that he was fussing around 3 hours after his last meal, so up until recently I was automatically picking him up & feeding him without thinking that his paci might be enough. Well it turns out it often is, so I've been trying to soothe him without feeding him for a few weeks now & he's been going 4-5 hours more & more.
The thing is it's me, I know it's me. The second he fusses I want to pick him up & "help" him even if he doesn't really need anything & I think it's making both of our nights worse. You're all reinforcing that it's ok for me to let him go for about 5 minutes before I get up, though, so I'll keep trying that

I agree. I can tell the difference in DD's cries right now and if it's just a fuss...she stays fussing.

Knock wood, he hasn't cried at night since he was probably 3 weeks old so I don't know if I could handle waiting for him to cry...it would probably take a long time for him to get to that point & all the while I'd be listening anxiously on the monitor debating w/myself about whether or not to get up lol

Re: How long do you let your infant fuss
I answered less then 5 bc i dont really let him fuss at all. He really is not a fussy kid so when he is fussing I know he is hungry or just not tired yet and I will pick him up. I'm kind of a softy too
